Golan Heights incident is escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah
Blame for Saturday’s rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which reportedly killed 12 and injured 30, was pinned by Tel Aviv on Lebanon’s Shiite Hezbollah movement, exacerbating ongoing regional tensions.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Hezbollah "will pay a heavy price for this attack, one that it has not paid so far."
What's known about the attack?
🔸 A rocket exploded in a soccer field in the Druze village of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights on July 27, leading to casualties among children and teens, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari said in a statement.
🔸 The IDF claims the attack was conducted by Hezbollah from Lebanese territory with an Iranian-made Falaq-1 rocket carrying a warhead of over 50 kilograms of explosives.
🔸 The US blames Hezbollah for the strike. However, a source close to US intelligence officials told AP they aren't sure the Shiite group intended to target the Druze village.
🔸 Hezbollah "categorically" denies striking the Druze village in the occupied Golan Heights. Officials of the movement told the UN that the tragedy was the result of an Israeli interceptor hitting the soccer field, according to Axios.
🔸 Earlier in the day, Hezbollah and the IDF were involved in a cross border exchange of fire over Israeli air strikes on southern Lebanese regions that reportedly killed four members of the Shiite group.
🔸 Israeli warplanes struck a series of Hezbollah targets in Lebanon overnight, as per the IDF. Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi announced the military is increasing its readiness for "the next stage" of fighting with Hezbollah.

US, Japan, South Korea to launch new military command
The defense ministers of Japan, the United States, and South Korea — Minoru Kihara, Lloyd Austin, and Shin Won-sik — have agreed to establish a new military command in Japan, citing Russia, China, and North Korea as “danger” at a trilateral meeting in Tokyo on Sunday, the WSJ reports.
The new US command will coordinate military operations with Japan, plan joint exercises, and participate in the defense of the country in the event of hostilities. This will be the first time a US warfighting command is stationed in Japan, allowing American forces in the area to operate without having to wait for directives from the US Indo-Pacific Command, located 3,500 miles away in Hawaii.
According to the WSJ, the move is aimed at building up Japan’s military capabilities, and boosting the West’s industrial base, which is expected to include providing Patriot anti-missile systems for the US that are produced in Japan.
The Russian Foreign Ministry earlier said that the trilateral military alliance between Washington, Tokyo, and Seoul raises tensions in the region. The only real threat in the Indo-Pacific region is US policy, while other issues, including North Korea's missile program, must be resolved through a collective response, the ministry added.

Russia will no longer be bound by a moratorium on deploying medium- and short-range strike weapons if the United States deploys weapons in Germany, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday.
"If the US implements such plans, we will consider ourselves free from the previously assumed unilateral moratorium on the deployment of medium- and shorter-range strike weapons, including increasing the capabilities of the coastal troops of our Navy," Putin said during the Main Naval Parade on Navy Day in St. Petersburg.
The Russian president noted that "important Russian state and military administration facilities, our administrative and industrial centers and defense infrastructure will be within its reach."
Putin also compared US statements about plans to deploy precision-guided weapons in Germany to the times of the Cold War.
