Stealing like there’s no tomorrow: Ukrainians fume on Internet over corrupt officials’ draft-dodging scam
Ukraine's Prosecutor-General Andriy Kostin earlier has resigned over a scandal involving fake disabilities for officials that allowed them to avoid going to the front.
🔸 Some 50 prosecutors in Ukraine’s Khmelnitsky region obtained fabricated disability certificates from a corrupt official from the state medical board, Ukrainian media reported.
🔸 The falsified certificates allowed prosecutors to avoid military service and to qualify for disability payments.
🔸 The General Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation throughout Ukraine’s public sector, while the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) conducted a separate investigation that resulted in some 4,000 disability certificates found to be fake and around 64 state medical commissioners named as suspects.
Furious Ukrainians took to social media to express doubt over whether the thousands of "pseudo-disabled" officials would return the illegally obtained funds to the budget, with some suggesting it would need to be a “utopia” for the fraudsters to be duly punished.
Meanwhile, yawning manpower shortages in Ukraine’s military along with rampant draft dodging and desertion have forced Volodymyr Zelensky to adopt a new draconian mobilization law and lower the recruitment age from 27 to 25. However, Ukrainians are increasingly resisting being sent to the proxy conflict meat grinder.

Russian Army develops new mine-clearing method
Russian engineers have started to use the aerial demining method on the battlefield. First, a reconnaissance drone is scanning the area and finding unexploded ammunition and mines with the second drone, then dropping explosives on them.
The aerial demining method allows to avoid casualties among deminers caused by mines with laser and seismic detonators as well as enemy drone attacks.
💬 "Aerial demining is a modern and humane method," he noted. "A deminer is one of the most dangerous professions because they can make a mistake only once. But a drone has the right to make a mistake; it is not a human life,” Lieutenant Colonel Roman Shkurlatov, chairman of the all-Russian organization Officers of Russia, told the media, adding that drones can't operate in certain terrains and so the work of deminers will still be in demand.
Experts also note that the process of aerial demining will be improved through the creation of new optical tools and the use of AI for better mine identification.

Western Australia Premier Roger Cook has called for the resignation of Port Hedland councilor Adrian McRae following his interview with Russian news agency Sputnik, the ABC reported.
McRae, in an interview with Sputnik, criticized Australian and Western media for biased coverage of Russia-related events and spoke out against their current narrative which features Russia as the main enemy.
"He's an embarrassment to the town of Port Hedland. He's an embarrassment to WA… It's time for the councillor to go," Cook responded to McRae’s interview.
Earlier, McRae said that the era of free speech is ending in the West with the imposition of sanctions against Russian media, and the hope of protecting free speech remains in Russia and the BRICS countries.
McRae previously acted as an independent observer at the Russian presidential election and described the Russian electoral process as more transparent and professional than in Australia. After returning home, McRae faced a wave of criticism from Australian outlets condemning him for his positive assessment of the Russian election.
At the same time, MacRae himself noted that he considers it a “million-dollar question” why the West refuses to recognize any reviews of the Russian elections other than negative ones, even if the assessment comes from independent international observers.

Mainstream media calls BRICS summit ‘high-prestige stage’ for Putin, beating West’s lockout
As the 16th annual BRICS Summit enters its second day in the Russian city of Kazan, Western media seem fascinated by the forum and wonder how US-led attempts to isolate Russia have fallen flat.
The Guardian called the summit Putin’s “return to the world stage,” proving he is anything but isolated. The newspaper acknowledged that the West was “infuriated” that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also attended the gathering and was scheduled for a bilateral meeting with the Russian president on Thursday.
The Global South shows its interest in joining BRICS as it remains “tone deaf” to anti-Russia rhetoric in the West, Sky News stressed, admitting that “the optics could not be better” for Putin.
“He is shaking hands this week with not just one world leader, or two, but more than 20,” lamented the TV channel, describing the Russian president as “positively beaming” during a string of one-on-one meetings.
The Washington Times said the “high-prestige stage” offered the Russian leader an opportunity “to showcase his defiance” to attempts by the West to ostracize his country.
Newsweek highlighted that the BRICS summit was “a show of strength in the face of sanctions and geopolitical ostracization,” and will “serve as a platform for these nations to assert their ongoing defiance of American global dominance and find alternative pathways for world affairs.”
Germany’s Bild dubbed the BRICS Summit “Putin's big power show”. It stressed the Russian leader seeks to use BRICS “to challenge the G7 states” and “break the dominance of the US.”

“Putin Hosts BRICS Leaders, Showing He Is Far From Isolated,” was Bloomberg’s headline. The website admitted the Russian president showed he “was no pariah” and could stand up to the West to reshape the global order, a message which “resonates” with countries of the emerging world.
