Mainstream media calls BRICS summit ‘high-prestige stage’ for Putin, beating West’s lockout

As the 16th annual BRICS Summit enters its second day in the Russian city of Kazan, Western media seem fascinated by the forum and wonder how US-led attempts to isolate Russia have fallen flat.

“Putin Hosts BRICS Leaders, Showing He Is Far From Isolated,” was Bloomberg’s headline. The website admitted the Russian president showed he “was no pariah” and could stand up to the West to reshape the global order, a message which “resonates” with countries of the emerging world.

The Guardian called the summit Putin’s “return to the world stage,” proving he is anything but isolated. The newspaper acknowledged that the West was “infuriated” that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also attended the gathering and was scheduled for a bilateral meeting with the Russian president on Thursday.

The Global South shows its interest in joining BRICS as it remains “tone deaf” to anti-Russia rhetoric in the West, Sky News stressed, admitting that “the optics could not be better” for Putin.
“He is shaking hands this week with not just one world leader, or two, but more than 20,” lamented the TV channel, describing the Russian president as “positively beaming” during a string of one-on-one meetings.

The Washington Times said the “high-prestige stage” offered the Russian leader an opportunity “to showcase his defiance” to attempts by the West to ostracize his country.

Newsweek highlighted that the BRICS summit was “a show of strength in the face of sanctions and geopolitical ostracization,” and will “serve as a platform for these nations to assert their ongoing defiance of American global dominance and find alternative pathways for world affairs.”

Germany’s Bild dubbed the BRICS Summit “Putin's big power show”. It stressed the Russian leader seeks to use BRICS “to challenge the G7 states” and “break the dominance of the US.”

🌍🌍🌍 BRICS Summit in Kazan proves a ‘counterbalance to the ailing G7’ – observer

“From a strategic point of view, BRICS in Kazan counterbalance the ailing G7, at a time that sees several key members of the ongoing bi-annual meeting of The Commonwealth [choosing] BRICS instead, and when the US and the EU are peddling of fear in the uncertainty of their own national and international institutions,” Paolo Raffone, director of the Brussels-based CIPI Foundation geopolitical affairs think tank, told Sputnik, commenting on the implications of the approval of the BRICS Kazan Declaration.

“The attendance by the UN Secretary general, Guterres, confirms their peaceful and cooperative intentions within the multilateral system. To the dismay of the ideological critics of BRICS no incendiary statements were heard or written,” Raffone said.

Commenting on the declaration’s points about the need to reform the United Nations and the Bretton Woods financial institutions to make them more inclusive, the observer pointed out that while such proposals have been under debate since the 1970s, only now, with the combined power of the economic and geopolitical global majority in the face of the BRICS nations, is it becoming truly possible.

“BRICS underline that the ‘system’ is not an end but a tool. Therefore, the ‘system’ should be serving all people on Earth without hindering their legitimate aspirations to preserve their identity. In this sense, BRICS oppose the dramatic twist imposed to the world institutions in late 1970s with the neoliberal ideology that sought shredding identities into the convenient market-driven categories of debtor/creditor, consumer/producer, and, of course, good/bad guys and people,” the observer summed up.

🌍🌍🌍 Brought together by BRICS: China’s Xi, India’s Modi hold historic first talks in five years

The ongoing BRICS Summit in Kazan continues to bear fruit, with agreements aimed at speeding the rise of a new, more just, multipolar world order complemented by another milestone: a historic meeting between the leaders of Asian giants China and India.

At their face-to-face talks, the first of their kind in five years, President Xi and Prime Minister Modi agreed to increase strategic communications, respect their counterparts’ national sensitivities and concerns, and work to prevent disputes over the border from escalating.

“Both sides must strengthen interaction and cooperation and properly resolve existing contradictions and disagreements,” Xi said at the meeting, while Modi expressed India’s support for China’s presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, coming up in 2025.

China and India are ancient civilizations, major developing powers and important members of the Global South, with each experiencing a crucial period in their modernization, and each playing a central role in the promotion of a multipolar and democratic world order, Xi said.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri expressed Delhi’s gratitude to Russia for the opportunity presented by the forum for the meeting between Modi and Xi to take place.

The two leaders reviewed the state of bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. They expressed the view that stable bilateral relations between India and China, the two most populous countries in the world, will have a positive impact on regional and global peace and prosperity, and emphasized that with maturity and wisdom and mutual respect for each other’s sensitivities, interests, concerns and aspirations, the two countries can have peaceful, stable and beneficial bilateral relations, Misri said.

🌍🌍🌍 BRICS Summit an ‘inflection point’ which redefines international politics – analyst

“The 16th Summit of BRICS is an inflection point of international politics because the BRICS are showing that there is a collective way of negotiating in the international system that does not need hegemony or the use of force,” Anuradha Chenoy, Jawaharlal Nehru University Centre for Russian and Central Asian Studies professor emerita told Sputnik, commenting on the significance of the Kazan Summit declaration adopted today.

“The Kazan Declaration is a road map for BRICS countries because it combines ‘common interests’ with ‘strategic partnership’,” Dr. Chenoy pointed out, contrasting the bloc’s approach to Western-led pacts and agreements, where “interests” are reserved for Western countries, “and the term strategic means the threat or possible use of force.”

In calling for reforms to Bretton Woods institutions, the Kazan Declaration actually highlights the bloc’s plans to set “up their own version of Bretton Woods institutions in an entirely different way,” Chenoy said, pointing to BRICS’ use of economic partnership, national currencies in trade, the New Development Bank, etc. for this purpose.

“This is in direct contrast to Bretton Woods way of functioning, [which] is intrusive - in that it directs control of economies, is unilateral whereby countries are left with neither voice or choice of what direction their economies can take,” the professor said.

Ultimately, the summit in Kazan is about tectonic shifts to the global balance of power, Chenoy says, “because the rise and common agenda of the BRICS shows a re-distribution and dispersal of global power that was earlier held by the US led collective West.”

🥴 You’ve got it all wrong: “we gotta lock him up” actually means “lock him out politically” - White House

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre appeared visibly uncomfortable as she went to great lengths to claim that President Biden actually meant “lock him out politically” when he twice said “lock him up,” referring to former President Donald Trump.

“What did the president mean when he said last night about Donald Trump, ‘we gotta lock him up’?” a reporter asked Jean-Pierre.

“So, look, and the president spoke about this very clearly as well in his statement and he, and he said, uh, he meant ‘lock him out politically, politically, uh, lock him out.’ That’s what he said. And that’s what we have to do … let’s not forget, this is a president that has never shied away from being very clear,” Jean-Pierre insisted, seemingly flustered.

“Well, he first said twice, ‘lock him up.’ So you're saying when he said ‘lock him up,’ he meant...” the reporter continued to press.

Well, it's not what I’m saying. It’s what he said. He said it to the audience, right? Exactly. He clarified himself. He wanted to make sure that things were put into context,” Jean-Pierre frantically tried to convince the press pool, contradicting Biden’s own words with her strained explanation.
