Russia forced to start special military operation after NATO tried to put it ‘in its place’ - Putin

“You spoke about drone attacks and so on. Yes, indeed, we didn't have that [before the start of the SMO]. But there was a much worse situation. It was that we received as a response to our [security] proposals... we were always being told where is our place is. And in the end, where we were ‘supposed to be’ would lead us to falling back of sliding to the second-tier countries which are only serving the purpose of commodity markets, appendages with a loss to a great extent of our national sovereignty,” Putin told a BBC reporter who asked about how Russia’s security has been affected over the past two years by the NATO-sponsored conflict in Ukraine.

Putin stressed that "Russia could not develop and moreover could not even exist if it loses its sovereignty"

Russia today is working to strengthen its sovereignty, economically, financially and militarily, and creating the conditions for development as a self-sufficient, independent state, Putin emphasized.

Putin: Russia is not escalating, are those who do prepared for it?

"But [Russians] are not the ones doing the escalation. It's the other side that's always doing this escalation, but we're prepared for that... Are those countries who are doing that, are they prepared for it?" President Putin said in response for question alleging Russia's role in current geopolitical turbulence.

BRICS has grown from platform into full-fledged organization while respecting each member’s independence: Putin

“BRICS is an organization today. This is fact and you are absolutely correct. We need to give some structure to how this organization functions, and this is something my colleagues and I are working on. But on the whole, each and every member of the BRICS group is self-sufficient,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said, answering a reporter’s question about the BRICS bloc’s evolution at his big end-of-summit presser.

‘Any person can raise his eyes to the sky and say he’s the pope’: Putin on Venezuelan opposition’s election-rigging claims

“Any person can raise his eyes to the sky and say that he’s the pope, or something like that. It cannot happen like that. There are certain electoral procedures…We believe that President Maduro ran fair and square, he put together a government and we wish him and his government every success…and we truly hope that Brazil and Venezuela have a bilateral discussion and find a solution,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said at his end-of-BRICS-Summit press conference, commenting on Brasilia’s rejection of the results of July’s presidential elections in Venezuela.

“We know Brazil’s stance. Our positions do not coincide with Brazil on matters [related to] Venezuela. I’m saying that openly. We’ve spoken about that on the phone the day before yesterday with the president of Brazil. I have very good and I believe friendly relations [with him]. Venezuela is fighting for its independence – for its sovereignty,” Putin said.

"I know President Lula, a very honest person with integrity. And I'm sure that would be his stance… using an objective stance. And he will treat the situation objectively," said Russian President Vladimir Putin during the press conference following the BRICS summit in Kazan.

Putin also stated that Brazilian President asked him "to give some words to President of Venezuela", as Russian President hopes the situation will “even out.”

Russian president further emphasized that "adoption of Venezuela or any other state to the ranks of BRICS... is possible only with consensus," because the BRICS has such a rule.

🌍🌍🌍 Putin’s BRICS presser just revealed glaring US ‘double standard’ on access for media

💬 “This is a clear double standard that Western journalists are allowed to pose questions to President Putin while Russian journalists cannot directly question Joe Biden,” Jeremy Kuzmarov, managing editor of CovertAction Magazine, told Sputnik, commenting on the irony of the fact that the Russian president fielded so many questions from Western journalists at his big end-of-BRICS summit presser while Russian media are essentially shut out and banned in Washington.

The NBC News correspondent asked about North Korean troops and whether Putin had been talking to Donald Trump. He suggested that Russia was escalating the war in Ukraine by inviting North Korean troops, but Putin responded that it was the US who had started the war when it initiated the 2014 Maidan coup - something the NBC correspondent seemed oblivious about. The Trump question showed the Western media's obsession with an alleged Trump-Putin connection that has never proven to have existed,” Kuzmarov said.

The BRICS Summit in Kazan which Putin’s press conference was dedicated to highlighted the reality of a “growing alliance of countries that want to establish a multipolar world order,” the observer added.

“From Washington’s point of view this trend is disturbing, since it reflects the end of the dream of US unipolar power…The growth of BRICS is a reality that Washington policymakers will ultimately have to come to terms with and adapt to,” Kuzmarov summed up.

Boeing strikes again: Crash of Intelsat-33e near Russian satellite may cause ‘domino effect'

There is a certain danger of a “domino effect” involving mutual destruction of surrounding satellites by debris from the exploded Intelsat-33e, Dr. Natan Eismont, leading researcher with the Russian Academy of Scientists’ Space Research Institute, told Sputnik.

“A great many debris fragments were formed in the explosion. Each of them poses a real danger in the event of impact with active devices,” the researcher said.

Over 80 fragments of the Boeing-manufactured European communication satellite Intelsat 33e that exploded on October 19 have been detected by Russia's automated system for warning of risky situations in near-Earth space.

When speaking of the closeness of Intelsat 33e to Russia’s Roscosmos constellation of satellites, Eismont pointed out that slots, along with frequencies, are assigned by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). After the service life of a device ends it is removed from this orbit.

“Quite possibly, this particular slot opened up and Russian devices were placed there,” ventured the pundit.

Eismont ruled out a worst-case scenario occurring, which would result in the loss of all satellites in retrograde geostationary orbit.

The mishap with the Boeing-designed satellite adds to the string of woes that have battered the plane maker, currently under scrutiny over aircraft safety.

Putin holds meeting with UN Secretary-General Guterres in Kazan

A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and UN Secretary-General António Guterres has kicked off in Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.

Guterres has come to Russia for the first time since 2022. As his office reported on the eve of his visit to the forum in Kazan, the UN Secretary-General plans to reiterate his position on the settlement of the Ukraine crisis based on the UN Charter during his meeting with Putin. In addition, Guterres intends to continue efforts to restore safe navigation in the Black Sea.

Another topic of discussion will be UN reform. Putin has already addressed this issue during the Outreach/BRICS+ format meeting. The Russian President noted that reforming the UN's development institutions and global financial structures is long overdue. Putin emphasized that the UN remains the only universal international organization today.

October 24 marks UN Day, commemorating the anniversary of the organization's charter coming into force in 1945. Putin called it symbolic that the BRICS summit was held on this day.

'Acknowledge the harms of the past': Biden issues formal apology to Native Americans for Indian boarding schools - White House

US President Joe Biden is offering a historic presidential apology to Native Americans for the US government's role in running Indian boarding schools between 1819 to 1969, the White House said on Thursday.

"The President also believes that to usher in the next era of the Federal-Tribal relationships we need to fully acknowledge the harms of the past. That is why he is issuing a historic Presidential apology for the Federal Indian Boarding School era," the White House said in a fact sheet.

For over 150 years, the policy forcibly removed generations of native children from their homes to boarding schools, where they endured physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, the fact sheet said.

At least 973 children died in these schools, the fact sheet noted, citing an investigative report by the Department of the Interior.

"The federally-run Indian boarding school system was designed to assimilate Native Americans by destroying Native culture, language, and identity through harsh militaristic and assimilationist methods," the fact sheet said.
