Supreme Court nomination team reveal

The White House is formally tapping three outside advisers who are veterans of politics and communications to help shepherd US President Joe Biden’s upcoming Supreme Court pick through the Senate confirmation process.

Former US Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL), former Clinton-era political director Minyon Moore, and Ben LaBolt, who once served as a spokesperson for the Obama White House, have been chosen to help boost enthusiasm among Democratic voters going into the November midterm elections.

How Biden handles his first Supreme Court nomination—which he’s called one of a president’s “most serious constitutional responsibilities”—could prove crucial to his and to the nation’s future.

📉 Mark Zuckerberg’s ‘metaverse’ business lost over $10 billion in 2021, and the losses keep growing

The losses for 2021 are in line with what Zuckerberg said last year as he expected to invest in Reality Labs. Meta’s CFO said on a Wednesday company earnings call that he expects operating losses to “increase meaningfully” in 2022.

The losses also put a drag on Meta’s profitability for the year. The company would have had more than $56 billion in profit for all of last year had it not been for Reality Labs.

Reality Labs’ financials also show Meta’s advantage in building the metaverse. It effectively has unlimited amounts of money to spend on these projects, unlike smaller metaverse rivals such as Roblox or Epic Games.

🏥 Strained US hospitals seek foreign nurses amid visa windfall

With American hospitals facing a dire shortage of nurses amid a slogging pandemic, many are looking abroad for health care workers. There’s an unusually high number of green cards available this year for foreign professionals, including nurses, who want to move to the United States.

Hospitals are struggling with a shortage of nurses that worsened as pandemic burnout led many to retire or leave their jobs in California. There’s an estimated gap of 40,000 nurses, or 14% of the workforce, according to a recent report by the University of California.

US typically offers at least 140,000 green cards each year. This year, 280,000 of these green cards are available. Also, the government will speed up the renewal of work permits for health care workers, which could help keep some foreign citizens already in the United States on the job.

💧 Race is on to save the Great Salt Lake

The largest natural lake west of the Mississippi is shrinking past its lowest levels in recorded history, raising fears about ecological collapse and economic consequences. But the Great Salt Lake may have some new allies: conservative Republican lawmakers.

This year could see big investment in the lake that’s long been an afterthought, with Utah Governor Spencer Cox proposing spending $46 million, and the powerful Utah House Speaker, Brad Wilson, throwing his weight behind the issue.

He’s sponsoring legislation that would let farmers get paid for water they let flow to the Great Salt Lake and other bodies. About 65% of the water on the Great Salt Lake watershed goes to agriculture. Under his plan, which has advanced at the state legislature, it would be up to each farm to decide whether to sell water in a given year.
