🏥 Strained US hospitals seek foreign nurses amid visa windfall

With American hospitals facing a dire shortage of nurses amid a slogging pandemic, many are looking abroad for health care workers. There’s an unusually high number of green cards available this year for foreign professionals, including nurses, who want to move to the United States.

Hospitals are struggling with a shortage of nurses that worsened as pandemic burnout led many to retire or leave their jobs in California. There’s an estimated gap of 40,000 nurses, or 14% of the workforce, according to a recent report by the University of California.

US typically offers at least 140,000 green cards each year. This year, 280,000 of these green cards are available. Also, the government will speed up the renewal of work permits for health care workers, which could help keep some foreign citizens already in the United States on the job.

💧 Race is on to save the Great Salt Lake

The largest natural lake west of the Mississippi is shrinking past its lowest levels in recorded history, raising fears about ecological collapse and economic consequences. But the Great Salt Lake may have some new allies: conservative Republican lawmakers.

This year could see big investment in the lake that’s long been an afterthought, with Utah Governor Spencer Cox proposing spending $46 million, and the powerful Utah House Speaker, Brad Wilson, throwing his weight behind the issue.

He’s sponsoring legislation that would let farmers get paid for water they let flow to the Great Salt Lake and other bodies. About 65% of the water on the Great Salt Lake watershed goes to agriculture. Under his plan, which has advanced at the state legislature, it would be up to each farm to decide whether to sell water in a given year.

🚙 Congress is still spinning its wheels on autonomous vehicle regulation

Congress held its first hearing on autonomous vehicles in over two years, and there was not a lot to show for it. At the end of the four-and-a-half-hour event, there was no indication that lawmakers were any closer to a consensus on how best to regulate this rapidly emerging technology.

AV legislation has been stalled in Congress for over five years now, with lawmakers unable to reconcile differences over proposals to increase the number of autonomous vehicles on the road while prohibiting states from setting their own performance standards.

A new set of concerns has risen in the interim, including the need to protect workers displaced by automation and to differentiate between advanced driver assistance systems and AVs. Democrats objected to green-lighting the mass rollout of robot vehicles without stringent safety and liability rules.

🏦 The move toward a digital dollar gains steam as Boston Fed says its prototype can handle 1.7 million transactions per second

The creation of a government-backed cryptocurrency took a major step forward on Thursday following the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston’s data on the technological viability of a Fed-backed digital dollar, also known as a central bank digital currency. The prototype is said to be able to process over 2.5 times the number of transactions Visa can handle on its network.

A successful rollout of the US-backed central bank digital currency will likely see resistance from bitcoin purists, who see decentralized bitcoin as the means to overthrow the monetary power of central banks and governments. The Biden administration recommended that Congress pass legislation requiring stablecoins to be issued by a bank insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and overseen by federal banking regulators.

🛥 Pier pressure? Dutch city to dismantle historic bridge to accommodate Jeff Bezos’ new yacht

A Dutch city has agreed to spend weeks taking down a historic bridge so Jeff Bezos’ gigantic new superyacht can reach the open seas this summer.

The Amazon founder’s 417-foot, three-masted ship that cost roughly $500 million is under construction in the Netherlands; however, the pleasure barge is too tall to pass under Rotterdam’s landmark Koningshaven Bridge, which reportedly has a 130-foot clearance.

As a work-around, the megabillionaire and the boatmaker Oceano reportedly asked Rotterdam officials to temporarily dismantle the iconic bridge, pledging to reimburse the city for expenses. Bezos’ Y721 superyacht will be one of the largest sailing vessels ever built in the Netherlands.
