👮🏻‍♂️ 9 officers hurt in ‘ambush,’ shootout at Phoenix home

A man ambushed a police officer who responded to a call at a Phoenix home early Friday, shooting him several times. The assailant then rained more gunfire on other officers who tried to rescue a baby that had been placed outside.

In all, five officers were shot, including four who were wounded while trying to take the baby to safety. Four more officers were injured by shrapnel or ricocheting bullets, Phoenix Police Sgt. Andy Williams said.

Eight officers were wounded by bullets or shrapnel, all were expected to survive, and the baby was unharmed, police said.

After a barricade situation, the suspect was found dead inside the home, and a woman who was found critically injured succumbed to her injuries, police said in a statement.

🌌 NASA’s new space telescope sees 1st starlight, takes selfie

The new space telescope has captured its first starlight and even taken a selfie of its giant, gold mirror.

All 18 segments of the primary mirror on the James Webb Space Telescope seem to be working properly nearly two months into the mission, officials said Friday.

Over the next few months, the hexagonal mirror segments — each the size of a coffee table — will be aligned and focused as one, allowing science observations to begin by the end of June. The $10 billion infrared observatory — considered the successor to the aging Hubble Space Telescope — will seek light from the first stars and galaxies that formed in the universe nearly 14 billion years ago.

US advances $6 bln nuclear plant program

The US Department of Energy said on Friday it is seeking input from utilities, communities and advocates as it develops its new program to boost struggling nuclear power plants with $6 billion in cash.

Nuclear power generates power virtually free of the emissions responsible for climate change, but the industry has lost 12 reactors since 2013 amid competition from renewable energy and plants that burn plentiful natural gas. Under the program, owners or operators of US nuclear power reactors can bid on cash credits to help support their continued operations.

The United States has spent billions of dollars on a program to permanently store the deadly waste from nuclear power plants at Nevada's Yucca Mountain, a decades-long project ultimately rejected amid pushback from the state.

💰 Twitter aims for edge in Big Tech's crypto contest with OpenNode investment

Tech heavyweight Twitter invested an undisclosed sum in OpenNode's $20 million funding round that valued the bitcoin payments provider at $220 million, per CoinDesk.

Last year, Twitter confirmed its commitment to integrate bitcoin into its services. Twitter launched a dedicated crypto team in November 2021, and posted a job listing last month for a senior crypto role to "shape the future of crypto at Twitter."

Twitter also lets users in the US (except Hawaii and New York) and El Salvador tip fellow tweeters with bitcoin. Twitter's Tip Jar lets users send fiat money and bitcoin via third-party payment services like PayPal and Cash App.

Gary Chambers is running for US Senate in Louisiana, and his message is clear: Black Americans are suffering under what remains of the systemic inequality structures created by the 19th-century Confederacy and subsequent Jim Crow legislation.

Chambers faces an uphill battle in his race for Senate, but his political ads are drawing attention to the issues that surround racial inequality in the US.

The Confederate flag, which was first designed amidst the Civil War, is considered to be a symbol of racism and white supremacy.

⚖️ US Judge strikes down Biden climate damage cost estimate

US District Judge James Cain of the Western District of Louisiana sided with those Republican attorneys general from energy producing states who claim that the administration’s action to raise the cost estimate of carbon emissions could drive up energy costs while decreasing state revenues from energy production.

The judge issued an injunction that bars the Biden administration from using the higher cost estimate, which puts a dollar value on damages caused by every additional ton of greenhouse gasses emitted into the atmosphere.

US President Joe Biden, restored the climate cost estimate to about $51 per ton of carbon dioxide emissions, after the Trump administration had reduced that figure to about $7, or less, per ton. The estimate provided by the administration of former President Donald Trump only included damages felt in the US, versus the global damage captured in higher estimates previously used by the Obama administration.
🧠 Mental health hovers over Olympic Games, on its way to mainstream

At the Tokyo Olympics, mental health was the breakout star. Amplified by some of the world’s top athletes, it shook up the tournament and made everyone take notice.

After star gymnast Simone Biles pulled out of competition in Tokyo because she felt that she was not in the right headspace, retired Olympic swimming phenom Michael Phelps memorably said: “It’s okay to not be okay.” “After my last Olympics, I put that pressure on myself to be perfect at all times, and that would cause a lot of issues at home. I would be really sad and depressed all the time when I was home,” snowboarding sensation Chloe Kim told reporters after she won a gold medal in the Winter Games.

As several elite athletes stumbled in Beijing, they were often quick to remind the world that they’re human, too. Skier Mikaela Shiffrin was particularly honest after she failed, even has a paid post on Instagram, in which the tagline is: “Yeah, I am human.”

🎞 Netflix is already making a docuseries about the alleged billion-dollar bitcoin launderers

Morgan and her husband, Ilya Lichtenstein, were charged this week with conspiring to launder 119,754 bitcoin, which was stolen in a 2016 hack of crypto exchange Bitfinex.

At the time of the theft, the stolen cryptocurrency was worth around $63.7 million. Now, it is worth over $5 billion. Lichtenstein and Morgan allegedly laundered around 25,000 bitcoin, which is worth $1.08 billion today, by using phony identities and various accounts to buy gold and NFTs. If convicted, Lichtenstein and Morgan face up to 25 years in prison.

It is the largest financial seizure in the history of the Department of Justice. Netflix echoed that sentiment in its heated promotional branding announcement, calling it “the biggest financial crime case in history.”

🚛 Police clear out truckers, but protesters on foot keep US-Canada bridge closed

Protesters remain at the US-Canada border, although police have pushed demonstrators back from the customs area. Significant law enforcement resources, including helicopters, remain in place and some police officers are equipped with tear gas guns. It appears that there are also snipers present.

There is very poor reception in the area, which could mean that communication is being jammed. Protesting truckers have blocked several US-Canada border crossings, including the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that the Canadian province was declaring a state of emergency in connection with the trucker protest. The premier called the protest at the Ambassador Bridge a siege and an illegal occupation.
