⚖️ US Judge strikes down Biden climate damage cost estimate

US District Judge James Cain of the Western District of Louisiana sided with those Republican attorneys general from energy producing states who claim that the administration’s action to raise the cost estimate of carbon emissions could drive up energy costs while decreasing state revenues from energy production.

The judge issued an injunction that bars the Biden administration from using the higher cost estimate, which puts a dollar value on damages caused by every additional ton of greenhouse gasses emitted into the atmosphere.

US President Joe Biden, restored the climate cost estimate to about $51 per ton of carbon dioxide emissions, after the Trump administration had reduced that figure to about $7, or less, per ton. The estimate provided by the administration of former President Donald Trump only included damages felt in the US, versus the global damage captured in higher estimates previously used by the Obama administration.
🧠 Mental health hovers over Olympic Games, on its way to mainstream

At the Tokyo Olympics, mental health was the breakout star. Amplified by some of the world’s top athletes, it shook up the tournament and made everyone take notice.

After star gymnast Simone Biles pulled out of competition in Tokyo because she felt that she was not in the right headspace, retired Olympic swimming phenom Michael Phelps memorably said: “It’s okay to not be okay.” “After my last Olympics, I put that pressure on myself to be perfect at all times, and that would cause a lot of issues at home. I would be really sad and depressed all the time when I was home,” snowboarding sensation Chloe Kim told reporters after she won a gold medal in the Winter Games.

As several elite athletes stumbled in Beijing, they were often quick to remind the world that they’re human, too. Skier Mikaela Shiffrin was particularly honest after she failed, even has a paid post on Instagram, in which the tagline is: “Yeah, I am human.”

🎞 Netflix is already making a docuseries about the alleged billion-dollar bitcoin launderers

Morgan and her husband, Ilya Lichtenstein, were charged this week with conspiring to launder 119,754 bitcoin, which was stolen in a 2016 hack of crypto exchange Bitfinex.

At the time of the theft, the stolen cryptocurrency was worth around $63.7 million. Now, it is worth over $5 billion. Lichtenstein and Morgan allegedly laundered around 25,000 bitcoin, which is worth $1.08 billion today, by using phony identities and various accounts to buy gold and NFTs. If convicted, Lichtenstein and Morgan face up to 25 years in prison.

It is the largest financial seizure in the history of the Department of Justice. Netflix echoed that sentiment in its heated promotional branding announcement, calling it “the biggest financial crime case in history.”

🚛 Police clear out truckers, but protesters on foot keep US-Canada bridge closed

Protesters remain at the US-Canada border, although police have pushed demonstrators back from the customs area. Significant law enforcement resources, including helicopters, remain in place and some police officers are equipped with tear gas guns. It appears that there are also snipers present.

There is very poor reception in the area, which could mean that communication is being jammed. Protesting truckers have blocked several US-Canada border crossings, including the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that the Canadian province was declaring a state of emergency in connection with the trucker protest. The premier called the protest at the Ambassador Bridge a siege and an illegal occupation.

👵 A daughter worried when her 80-year-old mom didn’t text her Wordle score. A man was holding her hostage, police say.

Denyse Holt fell asleep alone on Saturday evening, and woke up hours later in the dead of night to a naked stranger standing just feet away. Armed with scissors, Holt said, and then gave her a warning: “If you talk, if you yell or you scream, I’m going to cut you.”

After considering several options, the man locked Holt inside the small bathroom in her basement. Holt’s daughters suspected something was wrong, as their mother hadn’t texted her score from that day’s Wordle, and hadn’t responded to an additional text. That led the daughters to call Lincolnwood police to request a wellness check.

Officers found and freed her. She had been trapped in her cold, tiny bathroom for nearly 20 hours and held captive for almost 21. According to a statement, the intruder was armed with several knives. After unsuccessfully trying to use a Taser on him, police called in the regional SWAT team.
