🧠 Mental health hovers over Olympic Games, on its way to mainstream

At the Tokyo Olympics, mental health was the breakout star. Amplified by some of the world’s top athletes, it shook up the tournament and made everyone take notice.

After star gymnast Simone Biles pulled out of competition in Tokyo because she felt that she was not in the right headspace, retired Olympic swimming phenom Michael Phelps memorably said: “It’s okay to not be okay.” “After my last Olympics, I put that pressure on myself to be perfect at all times, and that would cause a lot of issues at home. I would be really sad and depressed all the time when I was home,” snowboarding sensation Chloe Kim told reporters after she won a gold medal in the Winter Games.

As several elite athletes stumbled in Beijing, they were often quick to remind the world that they’re human, too. Skier Mikaela Shiffrin was particularly honest after she failed, even has a paid post on Instagram, in which the tagline is: “Yeah, I am human.”

🎞 Netflix is already making a docuseries about the alleged billion-dollar bitcoin launderers

Morgan and her husband, Ilya Lichtenstein, were charged this week with conspiring to launder 119,754 bitcoin, which was stolen in a 2016 hack of crypto exchange Bitfinex.

At the time of the theft, the stolen cryptocurrency was worth around $63.7 million. Now, it is worth over $5 billion. Lichtenstein and Morgan allegedly laundered around 25,000 bitcoin, which is worth $1.08 billion today, by using phony identities and various accounts to buy gold and NFTs. If convicted, Lichtenstein and Morgan face up to 25 years in prison.

It is the largest financial seizure in the history of the Department of Justice. Netflix echoed that sentiment in its heated promotional branding announcement, calling it “the biggest financial crime case in history.”

🚛 Police clear out truckers, but protesters on foot keep US-Canada bridge closed

Protesters remain at the US-Canada border, although police have pushed demonstrators back from the customs area. Significant law enforcement resources, including helicopters, remain in place and some police officers are equipped with tear gas guns. It appears that there are also snipers present.

There is very poor reception in the area, which could mean that communication is being jammed. Protesting truckers have blocked several US-Canada border crossings, including the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that the Canadian province was declaring a state of emergency in connection with the trucker protest. The premier called the protest at the Ambassador Bridge a siege and an illegal occupation.

👵 A daughter worried when her 80-year-old mom didn’t text her Wordle score. A man was holding her hostage, police say.

Denyse Holt fell asleep alone on Saturday evening, and woke up hours later in the dead of night to a naked stranger standing just feet away. Armed with scissors, Holt said, and then gave her a warning: “If you talk, if you yell or you scream, I’m going to cut you.”

After considering several options, the man locked Holt inside the small bathroom in her basement. Holt’s daughters suspected something was wrong, as their mother hadn’t texted her score from that day’s Wordle, and hadn’t responded to an additional text. That led the daughters to call Lincolnwood police to request a wellness check.

Officers found and freed her. She had been trapped in her cold, tiny bathroom for nearly 20 hours and held captive for almost 21. According to a statement, the intruder was armed with several knives. After unsuccessfully trying to use a Taser on him, police called in the regional SWAT team.

🇺🇸🇷🇺🇺🇦The United States has been releasing intelligence warning about various starting dates of an "imminent" Russian attack on Ukraine since November to prevent a war, not provoke it, national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Sunday.

"We are not putting forward this intelligence to start a war, which has happened in the past... We are putting forward this intelligence to stop a war, and I think that fundamentally gives it at the outset a different level of credibility," Sullivan said in an interview with the CNN when asked to present evidence to support the US claims of a Russian false flag operation to start an invasion.

🇺🇲 US, Japan & South Korea meet in Hawaii to discuss North Korea

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met his Japanese and South Korean counterparts on Saturday in Hawaii to discuss the threat posed by a nuclear-armed North Korea after Pyongyang began the year with a series of missile tests.

Blinken said at a news conference following the meeting that the DPRK was “in a phase of provocation” and the three countries condemned the recent missile launches.

Pyongyang has rebuffed offers from the Biden administration to resume diplomacy, declaring that it won’t return to talks unless Washington drops what North Korea characterizes as hostile policies. Japan’s Foreign Ministry said they reaffirmed the importance of cooperating with the United States to respond to North Korea and to achieve regional stability.

👩‍🏫 GOP pushes US schools to post all class materials online

Republican state lawmakers across the U.S. are trying to require schools to post all course materials online so parents can review them, part of a broader national push by the GOP for a sweeping parents bill of rights ahead of the midterm congressional elections.

Other state considering some version of the idea include Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Parents also could file complaints about certain lessons and in some cases sue school districts. Teachers say parents already have easy access to what their children learn. They worry that the mandates would create an unnecessary burden and potentially threaten their professional independence — all while dragging them into a culture war.

Scott DiMauro, president of Ohio’s largest teachers union, is concerned that such bills will add to the spike in resignations and retirements triggered by the stress of teaching in the COVID-19 era.
🏈 Super Bowl Bets: Bengals Have the Early Betting Lead Over Rams

Before the Super Bowl kicks off, the Cincinnati Bengals are the bettors' choice to win, even though they’ve remained four-point underdogs to the Los Angeles Rams. DraftKings has seen the Bengals receive the majority of bets in 16 of the 17 states it markets.

The Super Bowl is one of the most important days of the year for American sports betting. It’s estimated that 31.4 million Americans will bet an estimated $7.61 billion on the Super Bowl.

The largest wager Caesar’s Sportsbook has received yet is on the Bengals to win straight up. Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, a Houston, Texas furniture salesman, allegedly bet $9.5 million on the Bengals to win the Super Bowl.

The halftime show will feature performances by rappers Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, and Dr. Dre, but without any expletives.
