💬Ukrainian President Zelensky has made it clear that he does not fully trust US intelligence data on the threat of a Russian invasion:

“It’s hard for me to characterise how the US uses its intelligence data. They probably do it professionally. This is their intelligence and their choice. I am grateful for the work that our intelligence services are doing, but I trust my intelligence. I trust the Ukrainians who are on our territories and understand what is happening around the borders"

I-39 in central Illinois reopens after pileup in snowstorm

A 17-mile (27-kilometer) stretch of US interstate 39 in central Illinois that had closed after a pileup involving about 100 cars, trucks and big rigs in a blinding snowstorm, fully reopened on Friday night.

The interstate had been closed in both directions early Friday, as crews untangled at least nine passenger vehicles and 19 commercial vehicles, as well as retrieved dozens more that slid off the icy roadway, Illinois State Police Trooper Haylie Polistina said.

The storm created travel problems in Illinois and elsewhere. Chicago’s two international airports saw more than 500 flights canceled during the storm, which dropped over 4 inches (10 centimeters) of snow across the region.

🏛 Biden signs stopgap spending bill averting shutdown

President Joe Biden on Friday signed a bipartisan bill to extend government funding for three weeks to give Congress more time to reach an overdue deal financing federal agencies through the rest of the fiscal year, the White House announced.

Each party had concluded that an election-year shutdown would be politically damaging, especially during a pandemic and a confrontation with Russia over its possible invasion of Ukraine.

The new spending bills will be bipartisan compromises but will let Biden and Democrats controlling Congress put more of a stamp on spending priorities. They also are expected to provide defense increases the GOP wants. In recent decades Congress has routinely finished its budget work months late. Averting shutdowns prompted by partisan point-scoring has become an accomplishment, not a given.
