Russian investigators say one uninhabited house and one outbuilding in the Rostov region were ruined following shelling from the Ukrainian territory. No one was hurt.
💬Ukrainian President Zelensky has made it clear that he does not fully trust US intelligence data on the threat of a Russian invasion:

“It’s hard for me to characterise how the US uses its intelligence data. They probably do it professionally. This is their intelligence and their choice. I am grateful for the work that our intelligence services are doing, but I trust my intelligence. I trust the Ukrainians who are on our territories and understand what is happening around the borders"

I-39 in central Illinois reopens after pileup in snowstorm

A 17-mile (27-kilometer) stretch of US interstate 39 in central Illinois that had closed after a pileup involving about 100 cars, trucks and big rigs in a blinding snowstorm, fully reopened on Friday night.

The interstate had been closed in both directions early Friday, as crews untangled at least nine passenger vehicles and 19 commercial vehicles, as well as retrieved dozens more that slid off the icy roadway, Illinois State Police Trooper Haylie Polistina said.

The storm created travel problems in Illinois and elsewhere. Chicago’s two international airports saw more than 500 flights canceled during the storm, which dropped over 4 inches (10 centimeters) of snow across the region.

🏛 Biden signs stopgap spending bill averting shutdown

President Joe Biden on Friday signed a bipartisan bill to extend government funding for three weeks to give Congress more time to reach an overdue deal financing federal agencies through the rest of the fiscal year, the White House announced.

Each party had concluded that an election-year shutdown would be politically damaging, especially during a pandemic and a confrontation with Russia over its possible invasion of Ukraine.

The new spending bills will be bipartisan compromises but will let Biden and Democrats controlling Congress put more of a stamp on spending priorities. They also are expected to provide defense increases the GOP wants. In recent decades Congress has routinely finished its budget work months late. Averting shutdowns prompted by partisan point-scoring has become an accomplishment, not a given.

🚫 California bill would have citizens enforce weapons ban

California Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed Friday letting private citizens in his state sue gun makers to stop them from selling assault weapons just as Texas lets its residents sue abortion providers to stop the procedures, then essentially dared the U.S. Supreme Court to treat both issues the same.

The state has banned the sale and manufacture of many assault-style guns for decades. But last year, U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez overturned that law, ruling it was unconstitutional while comparing an AR-15 rifle to a Swiss Army knife as “good for both home and battle.” The ruling incensed Newsom and he vowed to fight back.

The bill is one of four pieces of legislation targeting the gun industry in California. The other bills would make it illegal to market assault weapons to children, crack down on ghost guns and make it easier for people to sue gun manufacturers for liability in shootings.

🚨 ALERT: Deodorant recalled due to unexpected levels of cancer-causing chemicals

TCP HOT Acquisition LLC dba HRB Brands is voluntarily recalling all Sure and Brut Aerosol Spray products due to the presence of unacceptably high levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene.

While benzene is not a normal ingredient in any of the recalled products, a review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can.

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin, and can result in cancers, including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders, which are often life-threatening. Benzene is used in fuels derived from petroleum and is also prevalent in the environment.

Consumers with questions regarding this recall can contact 1-866-615-0976 Monday to Friday from 8:30am–5pm (PT)

🍎 Apple Store employees in the US are quietly trying to unionize

It's not just Amazon and Google workers hoping to organize. Workers at six or more US Apple Store locations are quietly planning to unionize, with "at least" two stores already garnering the support of national unions and prepping submissions to the National Labor Relations Board.

As you might guess, the central issue is pay. Alongside other tech giants, Apple's corporate success also has not translated to better wages for its employees, the staffers note.

This isn't the first time Apple has seen team members unhappy with working conditions. Last year's #AppleToo campaign gathered hundreds of stories of toxic workplace environments from both retail and corporate employees. Apple hasn't shown clear signs of addressing those concerns, though, and allegedly pushed out and fired #AppleToo organizers.

The works belonged to New York property developer Harry Macklowe and his wife Linda, who spent 40 years assembling a collection by some of the 20th century’s greatest artists.

Salesforce employees protest against its NFT ambitions

Salesforce employees aren't happy with the company's plans to enter the non-fungible token (NFT) market. According to the Thomson Reuters Foundation, over 400 employees around the world have signed an open letter raising concerns about the environmental impact of NFTs, as well as their "unregulated, highly speculative" nature as financial assets. "The amount of scams and fraud in the NFT space is overwhelming," the employees reportedly wrote.

NFTs remain controversial for several reasons, including their environmental impact. It takes a lot of energy to sustain the blockchain activities associated with the tokens. One estimate backed by researchers put an average NFT's footprint at over 200 kilograms of carbon, which is equivalent to driving 500 miles in a gas-powered car.

🎙 Kanye West says 'Donda 2' will only be available on his Stem Player

The singer says that fans won't be able to stream his next album on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music or YouTube Music. He plans to release 'Donda 2' exclusively on his $200 Stem Player, a portable device that reportedly makes it easy for users to remix music.

"Today, artists get just 12 percent of the money the industry makes," West, who claimed he rejected a $100 million deal from Apple, wrote on Instagram. "It’s time to free music from this oppressive system. It’s time to take control and build our own."

The device can be used as a regular music player to listen to music in the way the artist intended.
