🏠 Rents reach ‘insane’ levels across US with no end in sight
The landlord at Krystal Guerra's apartment in Miami raised the rent from $1,550 to $1,950, an increase of 26%. Rents have exploded across the country, causing those that have savings to dig deep into their nest egg, downsize to smaller units or fall behind on payments and risk eviction, now that a federal moratorium has ended.
Other cities across Florida — Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville — as well as the Sun Belt destinations of San Diego, Las Vegas, Austin, and Memphis have seen spikes of more than 25% during that time period.
In the 50 largest US metro areas, median rent prices have risen an astounding 19.3% from December 2020 to December 2021. Rising rents are a key driver of the high inflation that has become one of the nation’s top economic problems. Nationally, economists expect rents to continue to rise this year, but at a slower pace, thanks to increased construction.

📍Lie, Cheat, Steal, Cry? US Military Intelligence Overwhelmed by Toxic Workplace Complaints: Report
The Defense Intelligence Agency, or DIA, is tasked with collecting military information both public and classified sources around the world, with its data accounting for about one quarter of the overall intelligence the president receives in his daily briefs.
The DIA’s European operations are fraught with toxic workplace environments, bullying, harassment and colleagues spending time snooping on each other instead of concentrating on adversaries, according to witness statements and complaints provided to House and Senate intelligence committees and reviewed by the Wall Street Journal.
Among the information gathered by the whistleblower is a complaint that a DIA officer in Rome gathered and secretly passed negative information about co-workers’ job performance, creating a ‘hostile atmosphere’ and disrupting intelligence-gathering efforts.

🏛 President Joe Biden convened a rare Sunday meeting of the National Security Council on the escalating crisis in Ukraine, the White House said, amid a spike in violence that has heightened Washington’s ongoing allegations that Russia is planning to invade.
"President Biden continues to monitor the evolving situation in Ukraine and is being updated regularly about events on the ground by his national security team. They reaffirmed that Russia could launch an attack against Ukraine at any time," Psaki said in a Saturday statement hours after the US ambassador to Russia rejected repeated claims of an alleged invasion or strike.
Moments after Biden ended the security meeting, the White House revealed that an earlier impromptu flight to Delaware for Biden had been scrapped. His earlier travel plans were “family-related.”

📲 $1.7 million in NFTs stolen in apparent phishing attack on OpenSea users
On Saturday, attackers stole hundreds of NFTs from OpenSea users, causing a late-night panic among the site’s broad user base. A spreadsheet compiled by the blockchain security service PeckShield counted 254 tokens stolen during the attack, including tokens from Decentraland and Bored Ape Yacht Club.
Molly White, who runs the blog Web3 is Going Great, estimated the value of the stolen tokens at over $1.7 million.
Valued at $13 billion in a recent funding round, OpenSea has become one of the most valuable companies of the NFT boom, providing a simple interface for users to list, browse, and bid on tokens without interacting directly with the blockchain.

📢 US State Dept. Says NATO Deployments 'Not Designed to Provoke Conflict' Amid Poland Drills
Russia has expressed strong concerns over NATO military activity near Russian borders, which it deems a threat to its national security. Moscow has pointed out that Western claims of a looming "invasion" of Ukraine appear to be a pretext for advancing NATO's military presence further eastward in Europe.
“NATO’s deployments are always defensive and proportionate," a US State Department spokesperson told Sputnik amid ongoing drills in Poland. "They are not designed to provoke conflict, but to prevent conflict.”
Meanwhile, the situation in Ukraine's restive region of Donbass has taken a turn for the worse as Ukrainian government forces intensified shelling of the territory controlled by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Lugansk People's Republic (LPR).

🚗 NASCAR: Austin Cindric wins his first Daytona 500
Austin Cindric handled the final lap of the Daytona 500 like a veteran, or at least like a member of racing royalty that he is. The 23-year-old driver for Team Penske began his first full-time NASCAR Cup Series season by winning its biggest race.
Cindric took the lead late after two crashes in the final 10 laps slowed the action and removed Ricky Stenhouse Jr., among others, from contention.
The son of Team Penske president Tim Cindric, Austin is also the grandson of Jim Trueman, a former owner of an Indy 500-winning team. The younger Cindric won the 2020 XFinity Series noscript, then made seven Cup Series starts last year, including a 15th-place finish at the 2021 Daytona 500.

🪂 Another death during the Navy SEALs' 'Hell Week' highlights the dangers of one of the military's hardest selection courses
This is the second fatal training incident for the Naval Special Warfare community in four months. In November 2021, Cmdr. Brian Bourgeois, commanding officer of SEAL Team 8, died of injuries he suffered during a nighttime fast-rope exercise at Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Hell Week is probably the most well-known part of any special-operations training regime in the world. During this period, students' physical and mental endurance is rigorously tested, with runs totaling over 200 miles, long hours of physical training, and swimming in the frigid waters of the Pacific.
Navy SEAL students are geared to overcome adversity and push through, often against odds or reason. For the Navy SEAL community, training deaths are not common, but they aren't rare.
