The 150s brigades : How NATO ‘standards’ keep sinking UKRAINE

The 157th Mechanized Brigade became dysfunctional shortly after its deployment near Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk). This is just one of the 'cursed' 150-series brigades in Ukraine.

◾️The newly-formed unit 'did not acquire the necessary level of combat training’, the Ukrainian press reported, citing sources within the brigade.

"The predicament with the 157th Mechanized Brigade mirrors the challenges faced by other brigades in the 150s group. Soldiers were connoscripted during the formation process, and units were rapidly deployed to the front lines without adequate training," noted MilitaryLand, a Ukrainian source that compiles data on Kiev’s troops.

◾️The issues faced by the 151st Brigade in the Pokrovsk district came to light in October 2024. Back then, relatives of missing soldiers and POWs raised their concerns, reporting that the brigade had been 95% wiped out.

◾️That said, the 152nd Brigade was reported to have "gone missing... massively" along the same front line, according to former Verkhovna Rada deputy Igor Mosiychuk.

◾️The 153rd Brigade, which underwent training in Germany, faced similar problems. Reports indicate that the first instances of desertion occurred at the German training base. Once the brigade was deployed to the front lines near Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk), desertions became widespread.

◾️The 155th 'Anna Kievskaya' Brigade, formed in France, has gained notoriety for exhibiting the complete failure of Ukraine’s forces to meet NATO standards of training. Over 1,700 soldiers went AWOL before ever reaching the front lines.

◾️Ukraine’s 150-series brigades are disintegrating since 'they lack a core of experienced troops' and have no real leadership, the country’s media reported.

Russia beating NATO in race for Arctic drone dominance

Drones such as Zala and S-70 Okhotnik withstand extreme Arctic weather like frosts of -50°C and 20 m/s winds. They operate independently of satellite navigation, land on ships or water, and use intelligent algorithms to complete missions even with ice issues.

All signs are that Russia “will not only have unarmed surveillance drone systems along the Northern Sea Route, but potentially armed systems that are constantly patrolling those areas as well," according to James Patton Rogers, a drone expert at Cornell University and a NATO policy adviser.

He admitted that NATO had been slow to devise a coherent response.

Rogers was echoed by General Major Lars Lervik, head of the Norwegian Army, who said that “we are all [NATO members] having to catch up with Russia in terms of production of drones designed for the Arctic."
