🚛 National Guard to help DC control traffic for truck convoys
The Pentagon has approved the deployment of 700 unarmed National Guard troops to the nation’s capital as the city prepares for next week’s trucker convoys planning to protest pandemic restrictions.
The troops would be used to assist with traffic control during demonstrations expected in the city. Four hundred Guard members from the District of Columbia Guard will be joined by 300 Guard members from other states.
Metro police chief Robert Contee said Friday that his department was closely monitoring the shifting information and would be devoting additional police work hours in a rolling state of heightened alert over the next few weeks. In the meantime, he asked DC residents to stay alert for unexpected traffic snarls.

⛏ As climate change costs mount, Biden seeks to price damages
In the coal fields of eastern Montana, climate change is forcing a stark choice: halt mining that paid for everything from schools to senior centers, or risk astronomical damage as fossil fuel emissions warm the planet causing weather events that destroy infrastructure.
Spring Creek’s hundreds of jobs help undergird the economy of the Crow Indian Reservation and nearby parts of Wyoming. In Big Horn County, encompassing most of the reservation, taxes and royalties from the extraction of coal fund almost two-thirds of government services. It’s one of the most coal-dependent communities in America.
Applying the administration’s carbon cost would yield estimated damages of over $1 billion annually from a federal government coal sale that would keep it mining for at least another few years. Those who seek to slow the effects of climate change want the department to stop the ongoing expansion and end the practice of open pit mining.

📨 USPS rejects Biden’s recommendation to buy more electric mail trucks
The United States Postal Service authorized the replacement of its mail truck fleet with nearly all gasoline-powered vehicles, rejecting a plea from US President Joe Biden to include more electric vehicles in its purchase.
The move, announced Wednesday, signals the independent agency’s decision to move forward with a controversial plan to purchase 165,000 next-generation mail trucks, only 10 percent of which will be battery-electric vehicles (BEV). Although mitigating the effects of climate change were noted, the USPS determined that there was no legal reason to delay its plans.
As a quasi-independent agency, Biden cannot order the USPS to procure more EVs. But Congress, which is currently controlled by Democrats, could pass a law requiring the agency to do so and could provide extra funding as well.
