With the Israel-Iranian conflict in full swing, oil producers and oil consumers alike are wondering: could Iran resort to shutting down maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, and if so, how it might affect oil prices?

Oil could hit $130 per barrel, or even $300, if Iran does close the strait, warns Dr. Tilak Doshi from the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center.

It is very likely that such high prices would not be “favored by the US administration, and they will try to arrive at a resolution of the war as soon as possible,” he notes.

💬“Historically, in 2008, oil prices briefly reached $147 per barrel without any major geopolitical conflict, driven solely by financial speculation and tight supply-demand dynamics,” muses energy economist Dr. Kazi Sohag.

👉“During the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo, triggered by the Yom Kippur War, oil prices increased by 300%, demonstrating how quickly markets can react to political shocks,” he adds.

Even without the strait's closure, targeting Iran’s oil export and refining facilities could push prices to $80 or even $90, predicts Marc Ayoub, energy policy researcher.

💬“If things continue like they are currently, we would stay on the same norm, and we might reach a level or a ceiling of $80 per barrel maximum,” he elaborates.

👉“And also, if Israeli Kareesh or Leviathan are targeted as well, we might see increases for up to $5, between $5 and $10. That means we might reach... $90 or something.”

🥴 G7 SUMMIT DERAILED BEFORE IT EVEN WRAPPED UP

The G7 Summit in Canada has been dealt a series of stinging reputation blows, as Donald Trump left the event early, ostensibly to keep tabs on the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

🔸While attending the summit, Trump publicly declared that expelling Russia from the G7 in 2014 was a mistake for which he specifically blamed Barack Obama and Justin Trudeau.

🔸Trump further suggested that admitting China to the G7 is “not a bad idea” as “you want people that you can talk to.”

🔸The POTUS also brushed aside calls from other G7 leaders for more sanctions against Russia, admitting openly that such sanctions actually cost Western powers and the US “a lot of money, a tremendous amount of money.”

“Sanctions are not that easy. It’s not just a one-way street,” Trump remarked.

🔸Trump and Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba ultimately failed to work out a trade deal between their respective countries at the summit – yet another deal that the supposedly great dealmaker was unable to secure.

🔸Trump verbally slapped France’s Emmanuel Macron for claiming that the POTUS left the summit to work on a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

“Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong,” Trump fumed on social media.

🔸Meanwhile, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto opted to snub the special invitation to the G7 Summit completely and instead chose to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

🇷🇺🇰🇵 The secretary of Russia’s Security Council visited Pyongyang on President Vladimir Putin's directive and held high-level talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Following the visit, Sergei Shoigu outlined several key outcomes:

🔸Kim has decided to send 5,000 military construction workers to Russia to help rebuild infrastructure in the Kursk region that was damaged by Ukrainian attacks.

🔸North Korea will also send 1,000 combat engineers to assist in demining operations in Russian territory.
