🇨🇳🇰🇷 China and South Korea's growing rapport overshadowed by US influence

South Korea, which for decades has been one of the closest allies of the United States in Asia, has recently began improving relations with China which the US regards as a rival.

🔶South Korea formally announced its intent to normalize relations with China on August 24, which became strained after the deployment of US THAAD missile systems to South Korea in 2017.

🤝A South Korean delegation headed by special envoy Park Byeong-seug visited China this week in a bid to improve the strategic cooperation and economic ties between the two countries.

🗣South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, however, openly admitted on August 25 that his country “cannot act or make decisions that go against America’s basic policy stance.”

Seoul thus “distanced itself from establishing any special relationship with China in matters related to US export controls or dealings in global supply chain,” Lee said as quoted by South China Morning Post.

🔍Nevertheless, Lee noted that South Korea’s relations with China are maintained “at a level focused on managing the inevitable ties that arise from this proximity."

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun, in the meantime, warned that the relations between China and South Korea are based on mutual interests and should not be interfered with.

🇪🇬 ONLY PRACTICAL SOLUTION - Egypt urges Gaza ceasefire

💬 "I am constantly in contact with US Special Representative Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Mark Rubio. We tell them that the only practical solution is to accept a deal based on Witkoff's proposal. This is the best option," Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said.

The mediators have a desire to reach a comprehensive deal that would "make it impossible for Israeli strikes to repeat," but workable solutions need to be offered, the minister added.

🤔 ‘Are we the baddies?’ Finnish Air Force seeks to strip swastika from its flags

👉 Finland’s Air Force may soon remove the swastikas – a symbol often associated with Nazi Germany – from the military branch’s flags.

The reason for this move was apparently awkwardness caused while dealing with foreigners, especially with Americans who were among the opponents of the Nazis (and Finland) during World War II, local broadcaster explained.

💬 "We could have continued with this flag, but sometimes awkward situations can arise with foreign visitors. It may be wise to live with the times," Karelia Air Wing commander Colonel Tomi Böhm told local media.

🚨 Iran to ABANDON current level of cooperation with IAEA if sanctions restored – Deputy FM Iran will abandon the current level of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if Europe activates the mechanism to restore international sanctions…
🇮🇷 Restoring sanctions against Iran to undermine cooperation with IAEA – Iranian Foreign Ministry

💬 "The decision of the E3 [France, Germany and UK] will seriously undermine the current level of interaction and cooperation between Iran and the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency]. This provocative and unjustified escalation of the situation will be met with adequate countermeasures from Tehran," the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Telegram.

This follows earlier remarks by Deputy FM Kazem Gharibabadi, who warned that if Europe reactivates sanctions, “the current trajectory of Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA will be interrupted, as further interaction with the agency will lose all meaning.” He added that Europe has “no grounds” to trigger the mechanism.

💥 'Gangster band': Russia slams EU trio over anti-Iran sanctions

👉 Russia has expressed disappointment at the decision of the E3 (France, Germany, and the UK) to trigger the mechanism for restoring sanctions against Iran, Dmitry Polyansky, Russia's deputy permanent representative to the UN, told reporters.

💬 “This disappoints us, because we expected to deal with serious partners, but instead it looks like we’re dealing with some kind of gangster band,” Polyansky said.

🔸 He stressed that Moscow does not recognize any legal grounds for the “snapback” procedure which brought on the sanctions:

“For us, nothing is happening, because we do not recognize the legal basis for such a ‘snapback’.”

🔸 Polyansky also underlined that the E3 rushed ahead without using existing instruments:

“They have not exhausted the mechanisms foreseen by JCPOA, first and foremost, the dispute resolution mechanism. So we do not think that this move by these three countries should entail any action from the council.”

🧠 Selective memory’ in WWII history and the rise of neo-Nazism in Europe

🗣 US Ambassador Charles Kushner complaining to French President Emmanuel Macron that nearly half of French youth has no idea what the Holocaust was highlights the “fragmentation” of World War II history that takes place in the EU, warned Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

🔶 The WWII tragedy of the Jewish people is often regarded in the West outside of the context of total genocide the Nazis perpetrated in East Europe to free the “living space” for their so-called “master race.”

🔶 The Soviet Red Army’s role in saving the European Jews from the Nazi murderers is often ignored as well, and Soviet veterans who liberated Auschwitz are not welcome what at the International Holocaust Remembrance Day observances in Europe.

🔶 EU bureaucracy, together with European heavyweights such as Britain, France and Germany also ignored (or even tacitly approved) of the destruction of monuments commemorating the heroism of Soviet soldiers and the rehabilitation of Nazi collaborators in certain East European states.

🔶 Yet no matter what the powers that be in Europe do, Russia will preserve both the memory of the people who perished in the Holocaust and the memory of the heroes stopped the Nazis.
