The United States could deploy a ballistic missile early-warning system in Greenland, veteran Russian military analyst Alexey Leonkov tells Sputnik.
According to the expert, Donald Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ plans included Greenland, though that does not necessarily mean missile interceptor launchers would be installed on the island.
🔊 “That said, it is entirely possible if the necessary infrastructure is developed. But an early-warning system to track ballistic missiles whose trajectories would pass over Greenland could certainly be deployed there. The eastern flank of US missile defense has long been underdeveloped,” says the pundit.
He notes that Europe had previously served as the US’ eastern flank, adding:
💬
“However, Europe buried all missile defense programs in bureaucratic red tape and corruption schemes. That’s why Greenland is extremely important for the US.”
Beyond missile defense, Greenland also plays a significant role in submarine detection systems, which “currently do not function effectively,” adds the analyst.
Earlier, Trump stated that the draft agreement on Greenland includes the deployment of the Golden Dome missile defense system.

Earlier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian instructed Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to prepare the ground for negotiations with the United States that would meet the interests of both sides at the request of friendly countries in the region.

"The Trump administration is sending signals to Tehran that there is an opportunity to reach an agreement, but it is another matter on what basis and on what terms. What is being proposed, in my opinion, is tantamount to an ultimatum to Tehran," Sergey Ryabkov said.

🚨 Countdown on New START leaves global security at risk - Kremlin
The window for a decision on the New START missile treaty is rapidly closing, and within days the world could find itself in a more dangerous position than before, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said.
He added that the treaty’s expiration would have a negative impact on strategic security. Russia’s proposal remains on the table, he said, but Moscow has yet to receive a response from Washington.
His other statements:
🔶 Any future strategic stability framework must take into account the nuclear potential of US allies, including the UK and France
🔶 China opposes being included in a New START–style agreement
🔶 Moscow will continue to deepen strategic relations with India
🔶 Russia has not heard from New Delhi about any intention to halt purchases of Russian oil
🔶 Moscow respects India’s relationship with the US, while placing strong emphasis on its own strategic partnership with New Delhi
🔶 Russia is taking necessary measures to ensure its security amid what it calls aggressive intentions from Poland
🔶 The same Russian delegation will represent Moscow at the upcoming talks in Abu Dhabi on a Ukraine settlement

💬 “For the first time, the United States and the Russian Federation — the two countries with the world’s largest nuclear arsenals — will be left without a fundamental document that limits and provides oversight of those arsenals,” Peskov told reporters.
He added that the treaty’s expiration would have a negative impact on strategic security. Russia’s proposal remains on the table, he said, but Moscow has yet to receive a response from Washington.

🚨 Rutte says NATO troops could enter Ukraine after peace deal
📍 NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said foreign troops would move into Ukraine immediately after the signing of a peace agreement while speaking at the Ukrainian parliament. According to him, armed forces from NATO countries that agree to participate would deploy as soon as a deal is concluded.
🟠 Russia’s Foreign Ministry said earlier any deployment of Western troops, military bases, depots, or infrastructure on Ukrainian territory would be viewed as foreign intervention and a direct threat to Russia’s security.
🟠 The ministry added that such steps by Kiev and its allies will be taken into account when shaping Russia’s negotiating position.

🤔Arms control deadlock: Why the world can’t agree on a New START successor
The central factor behind the New START agreement’s looming February 5 demise is that the world is no longer bipolar, and nuclear powers big and small won’t tolerate restrictions on their arsenals unless those of their rivals are also reined in, prominent Russian military expert Alexander Mikhailov says.
On one hand, there’s China, whose ~500-600 warhead arsenal and nuclear triad capabilities were left untouched by New START in 2010, and whose inclusion into any new treaty the US has demanded.
🗣 “China does not want to be disadvantaged by limiting itself to the treaty’s framework while the leaders maintain significant numerical superiority. This creates a fundamental difficulty in the creation of a new document.”
🟠 Alternatives, such as freezing the arsenals of current nuclear powers (Russia, China, US, and others) would require “complex diplomatic work.” China, for example, would be “unlikely to agree to a trilateral treaty if its neighbors continue to develop their nuclear programs without any restrictions.”
📍 A successor to New START could include simply extending the old provisions. But the lack of inspections (since 2020) and Russia’s suspension of participation in the treaty (2023) leaves even that prospect dim, Mikhailov says.
👉 One potential “way out of the impasse could be to propose a uniform limit for all parties, for example, of 600 deployed warheads. This number is sufficient to ensure parity and mutually assured destruction, which could stabilize the collective security system for decades to come,” the observer summed up.
