Road to Zaporizhia city:
The capture of Huliaipole means the Russian army has taken one of the logistical hubs it needs to fully open up the route to Zaporizhia city. The capture of Velyka Novosilka at the end of January 2025 opened the door to the Dnipropetrovsk oblast for the Russians, a border they began to cross at the end of July after fierce battles around the defensive lines on the border with the Donetsk oblast, thereby substantially reducing the usefulness of the defensive lines on the southern front. In the last two weeks of August, Russian forces launched a larger-scale offensive in Zaporizhia-Dnipropetrovsk, which was weakly defended by the Ukrainian army, coinciding with the dispatch of reinforcements to Pokrovsk, where urban combat was beginning. Not even the natural barrier of the Yanchur River was enough to stop the continuous Russian advance, which, skirting the defense line and trench systems, managed to reach the main Ukrainian defense line and the outskirts of Huliaipole by the end of November, where the battle has lasted just over three weeks.

In addition to Huliaipole, the Russian army has managed to cross the Haichur River line and the main Ukrainian defense line, creating two bridgeheads from which the next phase of the operation will be carried out: reaching the new line around the Verkhnya Tersa River. This line is formed by the geographical features and Ukrainian reinforcements that will be responsible for halting the Russian advance, as there are hardly any physical lines as such (black lines). There are two main objectives linked by this line: the towns of Orikhiv and Novomykolaivka. The first is one of the logistical pillars that the Russians need to advance substantially from the south; the second is located on the H-15 highway to Pavlohrad and Pokrovske.

The Russian army will advance towards the two towns in the coming months, but not before heading to the localities of Tersyanka, Lyubytske and Omelnyk, leaving the Vovcha River currently serving as the front line. The main Ukrainian defence line will be taken from the north, while secondary advances will move westward from Huliaipole. By the end of winter, Russian soldiers may have reached the Orikhiv-Preobrazhenka urban agglomeration.

In spring, Russian forces will begin the battle for Orikhiv and possibly Novomykolaivka. The former will involve an intensification of the southern axes with the aim of cutting off the route to Zaporizhia from the north. However, it is also necessary to mention the Vasylivka front, as the Russian army will continue to have problems advancing due to its proximity to the oblast capital and the large number of drones, which has meant that ‘advances’ have been carried out by small units tasked with destroying enemy positions and attracting Ukrainian reinforcements while the other fronts develop.
In the second town, while the battle is brewing, the Russians will advance westward through the high ground towards the last line of defence, Vilnyansk-Novooleksandrivka, which could be reached in the summer.
