Astrobotic reveals how things will end for its troubled Peregrine spacecraft
The Peregrine lunar lander will be unable to complete its mission, though the troubled spacecraft has nevertheless surprised many observers by continuing to fly way longer than expected.
Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic said on Sunday that it expects its spacecraft to burn up in Earth’s atmosphere in the coming days, bringing the troubled mission to a fiery close.
Peregrine marked the first attempt at putting an American lander on the moon since the final Apollo mission in 1972. It was also aimed at becoming the first private endeavor to achieve the feat.

Title: Elon’s Tesla robot is sort of ‘ok’ at folding laundry in pre-noscripted demo
Elon Musk recently shared a video showcasing Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot efficiently folding a t-shirt on a table within a development facility. While the robot displayed competence in the task, Musk's subsequent revelations tempered some of the initial excitement surrounding the robot's domestic capabilities.
In his follow-up comments, Musk humorously remarked, "First, I can definitely fold shirts faster than that." Moreover, he clarified that Optimus wasn't operating autonomously during the demonstration. Instead, it functioned more like an expensive marionette or a modern version of basic automatons, following predetermined motions to accomplish its folding task.
Musk assured that the ultimate goal is for Optimus to achieve full autonomy in its actions. However, he acknowledged that the showcased demo had certain artificial constraints, including a fixed-height table and a single article of clothing placed in a carefully arranged basket.
While Tesla has previously showcased technical prowess in highlight reels, it's essential to recognize that these demonstrations are likely highly noscripted and preprogrammed. Elon Musk's caveat underscores that the more challenging aspects of developing fully autonomous, AI-driven capabilities are yet to be tackled.
Creating a humanoid robot capable of manipulating soft materials like clothing is no small feat, showcasing impressive animatronics work. However, caution is warranted in assuming these demonstrations place Optimus on the verge of becoming a fully functional domestic servant with human-like capabilities. Comparing the current state of the robot to Musk's initial prediction of "within three to five years" reflects the complexity of achieving such advancements in robotics. Musk's ambitious timelines are well-known, but the current state of the art suggests that challenges in robotics are likely to persist before such futuristic predictions materialize. https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/15/elons-tesla-robot-is-sort-of-ok-at-folding-laundry-in-pre-noscripted-demo/

This is how much money Facebook earns from your data each year 🤔
Facebook's revenue isn't just fueled by annoying ads; it's largely driven by harvesting and selling user data. While these platforms are free for users, the cost is hidden in the fine print of terms of service agreements. Most users unknowingly consent to their data being sold, ranging from basic information like name and address to more detailed insights, such as search history and future plans.
A recent survey revealed that, on average, UK Facebook users would value their data at £250 per year, significantly less than the estimated $900 Facebook earns annually from each user. The study also found that a majority of respondents were shocked and angry about data sharing without explicit permission.
Companies like LetAlone are emerging to empower users to control their data and receive a share of its value. However, once users have signed up for services like Facebook, reclaiming control over their data becomes challenging. Even existing privacy tools like VPNs and antivirus software can't guarantee anonymity, as fingerprinting techniques can still identify users based on device details and browser data.
LetAlone advocates for transparency, suggesting that users should be able to see what data a company possesses and decide whether it's sold. The idea is that users should be compensated if their data is commercialized. While laws like GDPR and CCPA aim to manage and protect data, breaches still occur, leading to substantial fines for companies like Google, H&M, British Airways, and Marriott Hotels.
In essence, the landscape is evolving, with calls for greater user control and compensation for the valuable commodity that is personal data.

Facebook may be free to use, but the trade-off isn't just annoying adverts: your data is being harvested and sold for way more money than you might imagine.

Facebook categorizes users' data based on various criteria such as demographics, interests, online behavior, and more. This information is then packaged into targeted advertising categories. For example, if a user frequently engages with fitness content, they might be grouped into a "Fitness Enthusiasts" category.
Companies interested in reaching specific demographics or interests purchase these targeted ad categories from Facebook. Prices for these packages vary depending on the specificity and relevance of the audience. Niche categories with highly targeted users may command higher prices than broader categories.
While exact pricing details are proprietary, companies can bid on ad space to reach their desired audience. The more specific and valuable the audience category, the more advertisers might be willing to pay to access that particular group of users.

Apple Watches without banned blood oxygen features will go on sale Thursday morning
New versions of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are here to get around a US ban
Following a lost bid to halt a ban on selling its newest Apple Watches, Apple says it’s going to sell the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 without their blood oxygen features beginning tomorrow, January 18th.
The revised watches will be available from Apple’s website beginning at 9AM ET, and they’ll be available in Apple’s retail stores as well. If you currently have an Apple Watch with blood oxygen features, Apple says there will be “no impact” to those devices.
A court filing earlier this week confirmed that US Customs approved versions of the Apple Watches with the blood oxygen features removed. According to Bloomberg, Apple has developed a software workaround.
Here is Apple’s full statement from Apple spokesperson Nikki Rothberg:

Apple’s appeal is ongoing, and we believe the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit should reverse the USITC’s decision. We strongly disagree with the USITC decision and resulting orders.
Pending the appeal, Apple is taking steps to comply with the ruling while ensuring customers have access to Apple Watch with limited disruption. These steps include introducing a version of Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the United States without the Blood Oxygen feature. There is no impact to Apple Watch units previously purchased that include the Blood Oxygen feature
