Have you ever built something you're now afraid of? Take a comfort, because even Microsoft, the giant company, was afraid of building Microsoft Bob. Microsoft Bob was a software product released by Microsoft in March 1995. It was designed as a user-friendly interface for Windows operating systems, intended to make computing more accessible, particularly for beginners or those unfamiliar with computers. Despite its innovative approach, Microsoft Bob was not well-received by users or critics.
Many found it to be overly simplistic and cartoonish, and it was criticized for being too intrusive and distracting. As a result, Microsoft Bob was discontinued less than a year after its release, and it is often remembered as one of Microsoft's most notable failures. But I don't believe the product is as bad as it is often told. I think those who develop digital products for kids can draw inspiration from this old-day UX creativity and recreate it for kids and illiterates to make them familiar with digital equipment.
