* A Frithstead Update *
I haven’t put out any YouTube videos or Spotify episodes lately, as I’ve been a bit busy, but I hope to change this. In releasing these platform specific content, I’ll probably focus more on the Spotify side of things, as the video production, although is aesthetically pleasing, is time consuming. My hope is to put out something (at least) once a month. That said, my time is served best in continuing to offer quality research content and valuable posts on Telegram while spending the bulk of my time writing books. I have two I’m currently working on. Think long term. When I look around, I find it difficult to find quality Heathen researchers; hence, why The Frithstead was born. A channel that educates and encourages. A white pill amongst a black-pilled world. Check out the link tree and explore all The Frithstead has to offer. Hail good folk and béo ġesunde.

The Wælcyrġe, /ˈwæl.kɪr.je/, is a chooser of the slain. Under Wóden & or Frówe’s command, & led by the Norn, Sċyld, the Wælcyrġan gather select battle-slain warriors & accompany them, first to Hell, then to Ósġeard. In later Anglo-Saxon texts, something of the old idea is still shown as various glosses, where the word was rendered as a fury, or goddess of war. What’s interesting, is that the Wælcyrġan have connections with birds, such as swans, ravens, and or falcons. As seen in Suffridus Petrus’ account of Henġest & Horsa, their sister/mother is Swana. Is this a coincidence or can we, within Germanic lore, find a divine twin parallel connecting two closely related male figures and a close female relative with birds and or a Wælcyrġe?

Whatever the goal is, consistency is everything.
Consistency comes through discipline.
Discipline comes from strength of character and willpower.
You need the fire in the belly, hunger, anger...
It all comes down to how bad you want it. If you're lukewarm about your goal, you will never attain it.

Luck
The ancient Anglo-Saxon word, ræd — is a perfect illustration of Teutonic psychology. When given to others, it means counsel; when applied to the luck working within the mind, it means wisdom, or a good plan, and from an ethical point of view, just and honest thoughts. But the word naturally includes the idea of success, which accompanies wise and upright devising, and on the other hand power and authority, which are the working of a sound will. Men setting about to discuss difficult matters stand in need of ræd and quickness of mind, says an Old-English writer. A rædless man is weakened by lack of will, lack of power and lack of self-assertion.

These famous stanzas in the 'Gestaþáttr' of the Hávamál, also having the first two lines echoed in the Hákonarmál, have parallels, using identical vocabulary in the Old English poem, The Wanderer (Eardstapa). This suggests an earlier Germanic oral tradition to both Norse and Anglo-Saxon culture:
"Hēr bið fēoh lǣne, hēr bið frēond lǣne,
hēr bið mon lǣne, hēr bið mǣg lǣne,
eal þis eorþan gesteal idel weorþeð."
"Here is cattle/money fleeting, here is a friend fleeting,
here is man fleeting, here is a kinsman fleeting,
all this foundation of the earth becomes vanity."
Note also, whereas Old Norse frændr means kinsman, Old English frēond is friend, but it uses mǣg for kinsman in the second line.
The Norse dómr, fame, has plentiful parallels in Old English, such as Maxims I, ll.79;
"Dōm biþ selast", fame is best.

More on the Divine Twins study next week, but for today, I’m happy to announce a Frithstead side project focusing on learning a form of Old English. Utilizing the Late West Saxon dialect, with the grammatical structure of modern English, Folcsprǽċ is a simplified version of the Old English language. Designed to be easily incorporated into our daily speech, and building Folcsida; thus, honoring our gods & forefathers. I invite you to join, and welcome you to, Leornung Folcsprǽċ.

"Vikings weren't a race, it was an occupation, to 'go viking'. Anyone could be a viking."
Anglo-Saxons would disagree.
"Hrōþwulf and Hrōðgār hēoldon lengest
sibbe ætsomne suhtorfædran,
siþþan hȳ forwræcon wicinga cynn
ond Ingeldes ord forbigdan,
forheowan æt Heorote Heaðobeardna þrym."
"Hrothwulf and Hrothgar held longest
peace together, uncle and nephew,
since they forwroke the Vikings' kin
and Ingeld's ord they forbayed,
forhewed at Heorot the Hathobards' thrum."
Cynn derives from the same root as nation, meaning to give birth or beget and literally means race or kind.
Additionally Víkingr did not mean an occupation. It is a masculine noun, not a verbal gerund, which was feminine (in the form of -ung), nor a present participle (originally -ende). This ending means descent or belonging, like king (cyning, belonging to kin), atheling (æþeling, descent from nobility), thus wīcing was one belonging to a wīc (camp) or vík (inlet), interchangeable with Norðmenn or Dene, referring to Norwegians or Danes.

Are there Norse Divine Twins?
There are a number of twins, or theorized twins: Yngvi-Freyr & Freyja, Frigg & Njörðr, Máni & Sunna, Þórr & Týr, Loki & Gullveig, & Baldr & Höðr. Their Old English names being Ingwine-Fréa & Frówe, Fríġe & Nyord, Móna & Sunne, Þunor & Tíw, Loga & Goldwǽġe, Bældæġ & Heaðudéor. Though which, if any, would fit the Divine Twins role? It can be theorized that with the Norse, the Divine Twins, in veering from their Indo-European origins, morphed them into a father son duo with the maiden becoming the other twin, such as Fréa, Nyord, & Frówe. In this form, Fréa & Nyord are paired as father and son & share many of the same functions, such as ensuring peace and a good season, fulfilling the “Helper” gods role by bestowing prosperity and being high priests. Adding to the divine twins motif, Frówe, becoming the other twin, has wælcyrġe, bird, and dawn connections.

Sources reenforcing a Norse Divine Twin Triad:
"Wóden placed Nyord and Fréa as priests of the sacrifices, and they became Diar of the Ésaland folk. Nyord’s daughter Frówe was priestess of the sacrifices, and first taught the Asaland people the magic art, as it was in use and fashion among the Wanaland folk."
"“Fréa took the kingdom after Nyord, and was called drot by the
Swedes, and they paid taxes to him. He was, like his father,
fortunate in friends and in good seasons. Fréa built a great
temple at Upsal, made it his chief seat, and gave it all his
taxes, his land, and goods. Then began the Upsal domains, which
have remained ever since."

Frówe Within the Divine Triad: Building Upon Connections
Within the Indo-European Divine Twin mythos, the Norse appear to have morphed the twins into a Father-Son duo, with the sister goddess becoming the other twin. Frówe (Freyja to the Norse) bears the ability to dawn a skin of feathers (Þrymskviða; Skáldskaparmál). Birds, such as Swans (Vǫlundarkviða), ravens (Cotton Cleopatra A. iii; Helgakviða Hundingsbana II; Húsdrápa; Hrafnsmál), and hawks (Skáldskaparmál) are intimately associated with the Wælcyrġan, the receivers of the slain. Frówe, as recorded, is the Hawk-skinned Wælcyrġan leader who receives half the battle-slain warriors. Each Germanic expression contains a piece of the puzzle that comprise our sacred Folcsida.

A powerful, insightful message from the Heliotroph blog.
“In 1000 years there will be no America, Russia, or China in any contemporarily intelligible form, but there will still be Gods and there will still be children of your children living in their world. The only patrimony you can actually guarantee them that far into the future is your own presence as an Ancestor.”
When there is no more “America” or “Russia” or “China”, and modern, Westphalian nation-state identities have become irrelevant, what will you be? How will you identify yourself? Without knowing from whom you descend, how will you know what identity to bequeath to your own descendants?
Ancestry, denoting actual membership in an ethnic religion, is absolutely essential. Germanic ancestry in the patriline, as in all Indo-European spiritual traditions, is essential to Heathenry. Many modern “folkish” and reconstructionist Heathens place emphasis on Heathenry as an ancestral faith, without actually knowing who their ancestors are, or ignoring who they are if it seems more advantageous to do so.
Yet, ancestry is only the beginning, not the end, of the journey. What are you doing to better yourself? What are you doing to better your family? What kind of patrimony are you leaving to your posterity?
Will you be an Ancestor worth honoring?
Something to ponder...

Seaxnéat, Ingwine-Fréa, a Germanic Father-god
The Anglo-Saxon Rune poem states that Ing was from the East-Danes, which puts him in the lands of the southern Swedes and Danes. These lands, & the folk which live, & have lived in them, have been interconnected for millennia. Some believe that the Skåne region of southern Sweden is the sacred orhámet, or original homeland, which spawned the ethnogenesis of the Germanic folk. Given that the broader Germanic folk, from Germany to England and Scandinavia to Northern Italy, evolved out of a Common Germanic folk, this is not out of the realm of legitimate possibility; thus, only reinforces the belief that Seaxnéat, Ingwine-Fréa, is the type of “Father-god” to many of the Germanic folk, if not all of the tribes and their diaspora today.

Seaxnéat, Ingwine-Fréa, a Germanic Horse-God
Seaxnéat, Ingwine-Fréa, while connected and known for many things, is intimately connected with horses and can be considered a Horse-God. In Trondheim, Norway, in association with the horse cult, to Ing was kept sacred horses in a sanctuary dedicated to him. Lokasenna 37 states that Fréa is the …”best of all the bold riders” and Hrafnkell’s Saga mentions that Fréa was gifted the horse, Freyfaxi. What’s important to note, is that within the Lore, gifts and offerings were indications of what pleased the gods or what the gods were associated with. An example is an offering of goat to Þunor or mead to Wóden. In this case, the horse with Fréa. Also, in Nafnaþulur, it’s mentioned that Fréa has a horse named Blóðughófi. Our forefathers honored a wide spectrum of gods, though many were devotees to particular gods.
