"We have been Europeans for 30 to 40,000 years. For about 97% of that time, we followed a religion other than Christianity. There is no proof that Christianity is anything more than a passing phase. Othinn, on his seat high in Valhal, is laughing."

Are there Norse Divine Twins?

There are a number of twins, or theorized twins: Yngvi-Freyr & Freyja, Frigg & Njörðr, Máni & Sunna, Þórr & Týr, Loki & Gullveig, & Baldr & Höðr. Their Old English names being Ingwine-Fréa & Frówe, Fríġe & Nyord, Móna & Sunne, Þunor & Tíw, Loga & Goldwǽġe, Bældæġ & Heaðudéor. Though which, if any, would fit the Divine Twins role? It can be theorized that with the Norse, the Divine Twins, in veering from their Indo-European origins, morphed them into a father son duo with the maiden becoming the other twin, such as Fréa, Nyord, & Frówe. In this form, Fréa & Nyord are paired as father and son & share many of the same functions, such as ensuring peace and a good season, fulfilling the “Helper” gods role by bestowing prosperity and being high priests. Adding to the divine twins motif, Frówe, becoming the other twin, has wælcyrġe, bird, and dawn connections.

Sources Pairing Nyord and Fréa:

18. Folk bear witness
With wond’ring praise,
How to all guests
Good gifts he gives:
For Bjorn of the hearth-stone
Is blest with store
Freely and fully
By Fréa and Nyord.
Ch. 82 Egil’s saga

'Requite him, righteous gods,
For robbery of my wealth!
Hunt him away, be wroth,
High Odin, heavenly powers!
Foe of his folk, base king,
May Fréa and Nyord make flee!
Hate him, land-guardians, hate,
Who holy ground hath scorn'd!'

Sources reenforcing a Norse Divine Twin Triad:

"Wóden placed Nyord and Fréa as priests of the sacrifices, and they became Diar of the Ésaland folk. Nyord’s daughter Frówe was priestess of the sacrifices, and first taught the Asaland people the magic art, as it was in use and fashion among the Wanaland folk."

"“Fréa took the kingdom after Nyord, and was called drot by the
Swedes, and they paid taxes to him. He was, like his father,
fortunate in friends and in good seasons. Fréa built a great
temple at Upsal, made it his chief seat, and gave it all his
taxes, his land, and goods. Then began the Upsal domains, which
have remained ever since."

Frówe Within the Divine Triad: Building Upon Connections

Within the Indo-European Divine Twin mythos, the Norse appear to have morphed the twins into a Father-Son duo, with the sister goddess becoming the other twin. Frówe (Freyja to the Norse) bears the ability to dawn a skin of feathers (Þrymskviða; Skáldskaparmál). Birds, such as Swans (Vǫlundarkviða), ravens (Cotton Cleopatra A. iii; Helgakviða Hundingsbana II; Húsdrápa; Hrafnsmál), and hawks (Skáldskaparmál) are intimately associated with the Wælcyrġan, the receivers of the slain. Frówe, as recorded, is the Hawk-skinned Wælcyrġan leader who receives half the battle-slain warriors. Each Germanic expression contains a piece of the puzzle that comprise our sacred Folcsida.

Next week, we’ll connect Henġest, Horsa, & Rowena with Fréa, Nyord, & Frówe, in our Divine Twins study, but for today, let’s look at a Frithstead side project: focusing on learning a form of Old English that utilizes the Late West Saxon dialect, yet with the grammatical structure of modern English. Called Folcsprǽċ, it’s a simplified version of the Old English language that’s designed to be easily incorporated into our daily speech and is geared toward those who aren’t language-minded, yet desire to learn their ancestral language. Through this endeavor, we can build Folcsida and honor our gods & forefathers. I invite you to join, and welcome you to, Leornung Folcsprǽċ.

A powerful, insightful message from the Heliotroph blog.

In 1000 years there will be no America, Russia, or China in any contemporarily intelligible form, but there will still be Gods and there will still be children of your children living in their world. The only patrimony you can actually guarantee them that far into the future is your own presence as an Ancestor.”

When there is no more “America” or “Russia” or “China”, and modern, Westphalian nation-state identities have become irrelevant, what will you be? How will you identify yourself? Without knowing from whom you descend, how will you know what identity to bequeath to your own descendants?

Ancestry, denoting actual membership in an ethnic religion, is absolutely essential. Germanic ancestry in the patriline, as in all Indo-European spiritual traditions, is essential to Heathenry. Many modern “folkish” and reconstructionist Heathens place emphasis on Heathenry as an ancestral faith, without actually knowing who their ancestors are, or ignoring who they are if it seems more advantageous to do so.

Yet, ancestry is only the beginning, not the end, of the journey. What are you doing to better yourself? What are you doing to better your family? What kind of patrimony are you leaving to your posterity?

Will you be an Ancestor worth honoring?

Something to ponder...

Seaxnéat, Ingwine-Fréa, a Germanic Father-god

The Anglo-Saxon Rune poem states that Ing was from the East-Danes, which puts him in the lands of the southern Swedes and Danes. These lands, & the folk which live, & have lived in them, have been interconnected for millennia. Some believe that the Skåne region of southern Sweden is the sacred orhámet, or original homeland, which spawned the ethnogenesis of the Germanic folk. Given that the broader Germanic folk, from Germany to England and Scandinavia to Northern Italy, evolved out of a Common Germanic folk, this is not out of the realm of legitimate possibility; thus, only reinforces the belief that Seaxnéat, Ingwine-Fréa, is the type of “Father-god” to many of the Germanic folk, if not all of the tribes and their diaspora today.

Seaxnéat, Ingwine-Fréa, a Germanic Horse-God

Seaxnéat, Ingwine-Fréa, while connected and known for many things, is intimately connected with horses and can be considered a Horse-God. In Trondheim, Norway, in association with the horse cult, to Ing was kept sacred horses in a sanctuary dedicated to him. Lokasenna 37 states that Fréa is the …”best of all the bold riders” and Hrafnkell’s Saga mentions that Fréa was gifted the horse, Freyfaxi. What’s important to note, is that within the Lore, gifts and offerings were indications of what pleased the gods or what the gods were associated with. An example is an offering of goat to Þunor or mead to Wóden. In this case, the horse with Fréa. Also, in Nafnaþulur, it’s mentioned that Fréa has a horse named Blóðughófi. Our forefathers honored a wide spectrum of gods, though many were devotees to particular gods.

Frówe is Éastre

Outlined & discussed in the StJ interview with Angriff & Redbeard (linked below), Frówe is likely the Anglo-Saxon goddess Éastre. Although connecting any Germanic goddess to the Dawn is speculative, but when using comparative Indo-European mythological & historical studies, & delving into linguistics, connections become apparent & the scattered pieces of the puzzle begin to form a larger picture. A few of the many points mentioned include how Dawn goddesses are associated with gold, blonde hair, light, treasures, & tears. She is close family kin to the Horse Twins; although, to the Norse, she is the sister/daughter of the male pair, Nyord & Fréa. In the Lore, Frówe is accused of being sexually promiscuous & during Éostremonaþ, sexual mores are relaxed. Another name for Frówe is Mardöll, Shining Sea, which is seen as the dawn over the sea. *Note that Frówe’s necklace, Bringsingamen, was under the sea.

Forwarded from The Wardrobe 👑
“When the family shall no longer have a head, and the great foundation for the subordination of children in the mother's example is gone; when the mother shall have found another sphere than her home for her energies; when she shall have exchanged the sweet charities of domestic love and sympathy for the fierce passions of the hustings; when families shall be disrupted at the caprice of either party, and the children scattered as foundlings from their hearthstone, — it requires no wisdom to see that a race of sons will be reared nearer akin to devils than to men. In the hands of such a bastard progeny, without discipline, without homes, without a God, the last remains of social order will speedily perish, and society will be overwhelmed in savage anarchy.”

Henġest, Horsa, & Hwítmanu: A Gods’-Blessed Triad

In looking at Henġest, Horsa, & Rowena, the Divine Twin mythos, & Fréa, Nyord, & Frówe, we can see connections & parallels. Henġest & Horsa were likely of the Cult of Fréa. Rowena, possibly called Hwítmanu, was likely their sister, with the foreign Welsh writers not knowing her exact relation to the Horse Twin brothers, so reckoned her as a daughter. It’s plausible that Henġest, Horsa, & Hwítmanu, when sailing southward from Éotaland, brought with them the Cult of Nyord, Fréa, & Frówe. With the Norse dropping their names, in favor of their noscripts, the Anglo-Saxons retained their names, Seaxnéat & Éastre, with Nyord, like Horsa, taking on secondary roles, or even disappearing from record. Whether avatars of, or ones gifted, empowered, & inspired by the three gods, Henġest, Horsa, & Hwítmanu were fated for greatness; bringing their gods to another land & founding a nation that would spawn men who conquered the world.

With the (United States) Supreme Court’s recent overturning of the Roe vs. Wade decision (which gave the US federal government jurisdiction over abortions), it seems timely and appropriate to highlight what our ancient ancestors thought of the inter-related concepts of abortion and contraception:

Numerum liberorum finire aut quemquam ex adgnatis necare flagitium habetur, plusque ibi boni mores valent quam alibi bonae leges.
“To restrict the number of children or to kill any of their subsequent children is considered an outrage; Good morality is more effective there [in Germania] than good laws are elsewhere.”

The Folcsida Ġerímbóc: Part 1
(The Folcsida Calendar)

Within Heathendom, as well as greater humanity, calendrical systems have been employed to keep an account of the passage of time. In the days of yore, our forebears followed the sun and moon, charting their paths across the skies and kept reckonings of their cyclical nature. Calendrical systems varied from tribe to tribe. Such reasonings behind the variants were to fit a specific locale, as our folk subsisted on farming & hunting and land varies from place to place. Other such variances boiled down to the varied traditions & customs a particular folk would observe. In short, there was no one-way to reckon time nor a universal time scheduled to observe holidays. Our folk were as flexible as they were independent. In the coming days, I’ll discuss this calendrical system, which in the spirit of transparency, the Folcsida Ġerímbóc is a modern creation, which includes the Norse, but is clearly & primarily Anglo-Saxon focused. It’s important to note however, that it’s construction & layout is entirely historically-based. Within Heathendom, for reasons that escape me, the Calendar is an issue of much debate, handwringing, & gnashing of teeth. In the spirit of friþ, I present this calendar as an option, nothing more, nothing less.
