🚩🇩🇪🇮🇱 Germany begins deployment of the Israeli missile defense system Arrow-3

On December 3, the first Israeli missile defense system Arrow-3 was officially handed over to Germany, making Germany the first foreign country to use this system. The 2023 contract for $3.9 billion is the largest one-time export agreement in Israel's defense history.

▪️The system is developed by 🇮🇱Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and 🇺🇸Boeing.

▪️The main task of the system is intercepting ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ones, at an altitude of more than 100 km, outside the Earth's atmosphere.

▪️According to the Israeli Ministry of Defense, the interception efficiency of the Arrow 3 system against Iranian missiles was 86%.

🚩 The new systems will become part of NATO's common missile defense architecture. The first complexes will be deployed at Holzdorf Air Base, located 120 km south of Berlin.

IAI CEO Boaz Levi stated that the partnership has a long-term character: "Germany is interested not only in Arrow-3, but also in the prospective Arrow-4 system."

✨ Germany plans to use Arrow-3 as a high-altitude interception layer within the European initiative to create a missile defense system "European Sky Shield Initiative" (European Sky Shield). In addition to Arrow-3, the system will also include the IRIS-T SLM and Patriot PAC-3 complexes. Germans are the first in Europe to gain relatively autonomous capability for strategic stratospheric interception, which was previously only possible with American systems in the region.

Why relatively? Because Arrow-3 is a joint development and contains critically important American technologies and components, its export to third countries requires official approval from the US government. Boeing accounts for about 40–50% of all parts, nodes, and technologies that make up the missile of this missile defense system. Therefore, Germany will still remain within the sphere of influence of US political forces, which can influence the supply of missiles for these complexes.

Another factor dampening the joy of the Bundeswehr is the recent intensive combat use of Arrow-3 missiles against Iranian and Houthi targets. In Israeli media and parliamentary committees, the issue of critical depletion of missile stocks has been raised repeatedly. The high cost of a single missile (estimated to be several million dollars) also limits the ability to rapidly increase stockpiles even for their own needs. The shortage became one of the reasons why Israel was forced to save expensive interceptors and shift part of the tasks to other layers of systems, including the rapid deployment of American THAAD complexes.
