Вероятно, потому, что война — всегда война. И в прошлом, и в настоящем. Меняются цели, совершенствуется вооружение, а солдаты продолжают жить и воевать по первозданным законам: за разорванного противопехотной миной лейтенанта, за высоту, которую надо взять ценой любых потерь, потому что если ее не взять сегодня — завтра потери будут еще больше.
Социум в большинстве своём отказывается от солдат, а они продолжают воевать без знамен, без святой правды — за последнюю, оставленную товарищем затяжку, за поделенный на двоих глоток теплой водки, за что-то, обретенное только здесь, на дне холодного, заливаемого дождями окопа, под перечеркнутым трассерами чужим небом...
И это что-то, не передаваемое словами, остается с тобой на всю жизнь, до последнего дыхания как самое главное и неизбывное. Потому что, как ни противоестественно, но здесь ты был счастлив. Может быть, единственный раз.
Так и жил: от войны до войны. От командировки до командировки. От страха и неустроенности этой жизни до той высоты, к которой шел с высоко поднятой головой, держа руку на предохранителе автомата...
