There are usually two ways to correct an error made by ad hominem attacks which result in harm to a person or persons, I’ve listed them below.
Feel free to pick one- just one.
Choose wisely, and do it quickly.

“I’m sorry for whatever trouble this may have caused but:…:

(1) Those who want to just be honest, don’t usually struggle with it, but in case you do, you can state clearly “I think I may have been wrong”;
or
(2) For those who have an inflated ego and want to save face while remaining somewhat relevant to “[outsiders]”: “I have some new information that shows they were right, and we should do something to fix this immediately.”

Or

Deal with the consequences.
