🇷🇺 🇺🇦 🇲🇾 🇳🇱 On July 17th 2014, #Russian-aligned seperatist forces in #Donetsk shot down civilian Boeing 777-200ER #Malaysian flight MH17, killing 283 passengers and 15 crew. MH17 was en route to #KualaLumpur from #Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport when it was shot down, near Hrabove in Donetsk Oblast, #Ukraine, 40 km (25 mi) from the border. Investigators concluded it was shot down by a Buk 9M83 surface-to-air missile transported from #Russia to seperatist forces in Donetsk not long before the downing of the aircraft.
The crew were all Malaysian, while over two-thirds (68%) of the passengers were #Dutch. Most of the other passengers were Malaysian and #Australian; the remainder were citizens of seven other countries. At least twenty family groups were on the aircraft and eighty passengers were under the age of 18.
Looters stole a variety of personal possessions and objects with value, but left behind some apparent undesirable items. #OTD

Among these unwanted items, a Minnie Mouse lunchbox, a Winnie the Pooh stuffed animal, family photographs, a child's diary, and intact passports, noted photojournalists at the scene.
As for what they took, wallets and credit cards were a favorite. A photojournalist at the scene said, "There isn't a single cellphone, wallet with money or camera to be found in any handbag or on the bodies. It's like they all mysteriously disappeared overnight."
Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister (who was also one of the first to blame pro-Russian separatists for the crash) reported that jewelry and credit cards were among the items being pilfered.
One Ukrainian woman living in Donetsk at the time came under the spotlight after she posted images on social media claiming to have obtained "Mascara from Amsterdam" as a result of looting.

Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has narrowed the missile launch site down to a specific field near the village of Pervomaiskyi, which was then in rebel hands. Near the village of Hrabove, where a large section of the Boeing 777 had come down, journalists soon found bodies scattered in the fields and a pile of suitcases by the side of the road already rifled through and items ransacked.
The intense heat from the crash had melted part of one of the wings, and a section of human backbone lay in the ashes among other remains.
Prosecutors played recordings from intercepted phone calls during their news conference.
They said witnesses reported seeing the missile launcher move from Russia into Ukraine and presented pictures and videos. The launch site was pinpointed by "many witnesses", prosecutors said.

🇷🇺 🇲🇾 🇳🇱 #Russia Terminates Cooperation With ICAO Council Case on 2014 #Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17:
The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced it is terminating cooperation with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) investigation into the 2014 shoot down of Malaysian Boeing MH17 flight over Eastern Ukraine. The reasoning behind the withdrawal reads below: "In the ICAO Council, let the Westerners and their satellites now deal with each other. We are ending our participation in this farce. Russia does not recognize the Council's authority to consider the planted stories of Australia and the Netherlands, as well as any decisions that will be made by them in connection with them."
The shoot down of the flight was concluded by Dutch investigators to have originated from Pro-Russian separatists in Donbas who were armed with a Russian Buk anti-air missile system without proper training or ability to identify aircraft types. Local seperatist militiamen posed over wreckage and looted belongings from bodies and suitcases shown in infamous pictures taken in the carnage of the mass killing. Two Russians and a Ukrainian separatist were sentenced in absentia for the murders.
298 passengers and crew were killed in the shoot down of the flight, notably 193 of them being Dutch.
The Russia Foreign Ministry had rejected the findings of the Dutch Safety Board (DSB) and the Dutch-led Joint Investigative Team (JIT) that was delegated investigative power by Ukraine. The country in which a civil aviation shootdown takes place retains the right to delegate the investigation, Ukraine chose to do that. However, the Russian Federation rejected this decision and demanded Russia jointly lead an investigation. Moscow cites the excerpt below from UN Security Council Resolution 2166 as reasoning to terminate cooperation. "efforts to establish a full, thorough and independent international investigation into the incident in accordance with international civil aviation guidelines" Moscow concluded that Western intelligence services infiltrated the investigation and lied about Russian involvement.
Withdrawal from the ongoing investigation changes little since the reports have already been submitted to ICAO. However, this does lay the legal groundwork for Russia to reject any further findings against it. Via theatlasnews.co @AtlasNewsTelegram

🇨🇳 🇵🇭 The #Philippines and #China Issue Competing Statements About Incident at Second Thomas Shoal:
On June 17th, the China Coast Guard (CCG) released two statements about a Philippine resupply vessel collided with one of its vessels during a resupply mission to Second Thomas Shoal. However, the Philippine government did not issue statements until six hours after the incident occurred. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) was the first to provide a statement, with the Philippine National Security Council (PNSC) and Department of National Defense (DND) issuing their own statement a few hours later.
Six injuries were reported among personnel of Philippine forces, likely from water cannon blasts. Additionally, one SOG member reportedly lost a finger when a Chinese vessel bumped into a Philippine rigid-hulled inflatable boat and then subsequently boarded it, confiscating at least 8 firearms. Additionally, the Philippines Navy says Chinese vessels punctured the RHIB's hulls, leaving it immobile, and most notably rammed and towed away a main resupply vessel from its mission. 🇱🇧 🇮🇱 🇨🇾 #Hezbollah Leader Warns #Israel and #Cyprus of Conflict:
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrullah has threatened “no rules, no boundaries, no limits” in a war with Israel, which comes as the #IDF announced that operational plans for an offensive into #Lebanon have been approved.
While clashes between Hezbollah and Israel have persisted along the border with Lebanon for months, tensions have started to reach a critical tipping point amid escalatory attacks by both sides.
Israel continues to carry out targeted strikes against key Hezbollah leadership across southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah has increased rocket and drone attacks into northern areas of Israel.
Yesterday, Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz warned that “We are very close to the moment of decision to change the rules against Hezbollah and Lebanon. In an all-out war, Hezbollah will be destroyed and Lebanon will be severely hit.”
Nasrullah has threatened to invade the Galilee if war is declared.
Nasrallah has also threatened to strike Cyprus if it is used as a base of operation for Israeli strikes against Lebanon in an event of a war.
“If it opens its airports and bases to Israel for use during war, then Cyprus will be part of the war,” Nasrallah warned.
Hezbollah has an array capabilities that can reach Cyprus, such as Iranian-supplied Zelzal and Fateh-110 missiles. Via theatlasnews.co @AtlasNewsTelegram
Reuters: "Cyprus is not known to offer any land or base facilities to the Israeli military, but has in the past allowed Israel to use its vast airspace - its flight information region - to occasionally conduct air drills, but never during conflict. Sovereign British military bases on Cyprus have been used by Britain for operations in Syria in the past and more recently, Yemen. The Cyprus government has no say in the matter. There are two British bases in Cyprus, which was a colony until 1960.
Nasrallah said his group would fight with "no rules" and "no ceilings" in the event of a broader war. He was speaking at a memorial event for a commander killed in an Israeli strike last week - the most senior Hezbollah figure to be killed so far in the current conflict with Israel. Hezbollah unleashed its largest volleys of drones and rockets at Israel in retaliation.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides denied any suggestion Cyprus was taking sides in any conflict.
"It (Cyprus) is not part of the problem, it is part of the solution. That role is evident, for example, through the humanitarian (aid) corridor which has been acknowledged not only by the Arab world, but from the international community," he said, referring to shipments of aid from Cyprus to #Gaza."

🇵🇸 🇮🇱 #Rafah Crossing “Destroyed”:
Recent footage has revealed that the Rafah Crossing in southern #Gaza, #Palestine has been effectively destroyed. The footage offers a good clue as to why the crossing has remained closed since #Israel took control of the crossing in May.
Since the crossing was captured by Israel, the amount of aid entering Gaza has dropped significantly. Data shows that in May the average number of trucks entering Gaza per day, excluding fuel trucks, was 97. This is a significant drop from April, when an average of 169 trucks were entering Gaza per day, which itself was an increase from March, when 139 trucks entered per day.
Since the beginning of the Israel-Gaza war on October 7th, the Rafah Crossing, within the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, has been the primary entry point for aid to the Gaza Strip. Situated on the Egyptian border with Gaza, up until May, the Rafah crossing was the only crossing into Gaza not controlled by Israel.
Israel contradicted claims that the crossing had been closed completely, referring to it as a temporary pause, and stated that it was negotiating with Egypt on reopening the crossing. However, the recent footage of the crossing has shown high levels of damage which render the crossing inoperable.
As Israel’s operations in Rafah have expanded, the overwhelming majority of the civilian population which was sheltering there has left. The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that less than 100,000 civilians remain in Rafah, from a peak of 1.4 million.
Israeli strikes throughout Rafah have reportedly killed a number of civilians, including on May 26th when an Israeli strike on an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp started a fire in the camp. The strike and the resulting fire led to the deaths of at least 45 people, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.
Israel has claimed to have killed a large number of Hamas militants in its battles throughout Rafah. As well the IDF has reported a striking number of their own casualties in their Rafah operations. On June 15th, eight Israeli soldiers were killed during operations in Rafah. The next day was followed by three more.

🇦🇲 🇵🇸 #Armenia Recognizes Palestinian Statehood:
The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement condemning the humanitarian crisis in #Gaza, calling for a two state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and most importantly, issuing a recognition of the State of #Palestine.
Armenia’s recognition of the State of Palestine follows similar moves by several other countries that have been taken in recent times. On May 28th, Spain, Ireland, and Norway issued official recognitions of Palestinian independence. This was shortly followed by Slovenia, who issued an official recognition on June 4th.
Armenia has issued continual condemnations towards the war in Gaza. While their condemnations have fallen short of nations like South Africa and Turkey, who accuse Israel of genocide, they still have joined countries worldwide in calling for a ceasefire.
Further, Armenia has sent 30 tons of aid to Gaza, including food and medicine. The aid was shipped to Egypt in March before it entered Gaza through the Rafah Crossing, prior to the Rafah Crossing’s closure by Israel in May.
Notably within their statement, which announced the recognition of Palestine, was a condemnation of hostage taking and a call for the release of hostages. Additionally, Armenia issued a condemnation of violence against civilians. @AtlasNewsTelegram
An Armenian diaspora has existed in the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem since the 4th century. Currently, over 4,000 call Palestine their home with a peak of 15,000 in 1948.
Israel provided numerous weapons systems and drones to Azerbaijan prior to their 2020 and 2023 invasions into Armenia's Artsakh, or Nagorno-Karabakh, region that left tens of thousands of soldiers killed and wounded, hundreds of civilians killed and wounded, and over 200,000 Armenians displaced.
Haaretz reported in early 2023 that Israel supplied 70% of Azerbaijan's arsenal during and before the time of the Second Karabakh War, from 2016-2020. Azerbaijan reportedly has recently largely been buying from Israel Harop kamikaze strike drone, as well as Hermes-450, Orbiter-1K, Orbiter-2, and Orbiter-3 reconnaissance drones which were used widely in their 2023 invasion.
