In April, Charles covered how the UK is targeting Telegram, citing concerns over 'extremism' with the made-up term 'Terrogram,' highlighted by Hope Not Hate. Now, Telegram founder Pavel Durov has been arrested upon arriving in France. What does this mean for the future of online discourse?

Back in April, Charles predicted the direction of counter-terrorism measures. Now, after Keir Starmer's so called 'Change,' we're seeing the focus narrow towards the far-right. As Charles said, it's a slippery slope when defining 'extreme right-wing terrorism.' Who's next?

This is Terrorgram... allegedly.
From the prescribed list of terror groups Under the Terrorism Act 2000, the Home Secretary may proscribe an organisation if they believe it is concerned in terrorism, and it is proportionate to do. For the purposes of the act, this means that the organisation:
• commits or participates in acts of terrorism
• prepares for terrorism
• promotes or encourages terrorism (including the unlawful glorification of terrorism)
• is otherwise concerned in terrorism
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/proscribed-terror-groups-or-organisations--2/proscribed-terrorist-groups-or-organisations-accessible-version
'The Terrorgram collective - Proscribed April 2024
The Terrorgram collective is an online transnational network of extreme right-wing terrorists who produce and disseminate violent propaganda with the aim of radicalising readers and encouraging individuals to commit acts of terrorism. The aim of the Terrorgram collective is to bring about the collapse of Western democracy and a ‘race war’ by encouraging others to engage in violent acts of terrorism.
The government assesses that the Terrorgram collective operates as an organisation in accordance with the guidance provided by section 121 of the Terrorism Act 2000. Its core leadership provides direction to the preparation of propaganda campaigns and coordinates activity between participants to disseminate terrorist content to advance accelerationist ideology.
The UK government assesses that the Terrorgram collective is an organisation which is concerned in terrorism. The UK government assesses that the Terrorgram collective is involved in preparing for terrorism through the inclusion of instructional material in their propaganda. The UK government assesses that the Terrorgram collective promotes or encourages terrorism. Their publications present a violent narrative and contain material which glorifies previous extreme right-wing terrorist attackers and encourages consumers to commit similar actions.'
