Cytokine-induced killer cells mediated pathways in the treatment of colorectal cancer

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀Cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cell therapy is a type of adoptive immunotherapy that due to its high proliferation rate and anti-tumor characteristics, is being investigated to treat various solid tumors.

🌀This review aims to summarize the clinical studies that investigated the safety and clinical efficacy of CIK cell therapy in CRC.

Role of serology tests in COVID-19 non-hospitalized patients: A cross-sectional study

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀We have surveyed 1,363 outpatients with suspected COVID-19 in Tehran, Iran. The analysis emphasized on characteristics of patients with positive PCR or serology of SARS-CoV-2.

🌀Conclusion: Assessing antibody titers in outpatients is invaluable due to the epidemiological importance of investigations in mild or even asymptomatic cases. Since the number of such studies in non-hospitalized patients is not high, the current study can be used as a comparison model.

Interleukin 17, the double-edged sword in atherosclerosis

New paper by CIP Members

🌀Cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, are the number one cause of death worldwide

🌀Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease. Therefore, immunological signaling molecules and immune cells carry out a central role in its etiology.

🌀IL-17 might have a dual role as acting both pro-atherogenic and anti-atherogenic depending on the situation.

🌀In this review, the immunological basis of atherosclerosis with an emphasis on the role of IL-17 and a brief explanation of the role of IL-17 on atherosclerogenic disorders will be discussed.

Novel NFkB mutation in a case of lymphoproliferative disorder case report

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀A young boy presented with symptoms overlapping different lymphoproliferative disorders including episodes of chronic respiratory tract infections, dysgammaglobulinemia, lymphadenopathy associated with splenomegaly as well as skin rashes. Genetic studies revealed multiple heterozygous variants including a novel mutation in NFκB1 gene.

🌀This novel mutation can reveal new aspects in the pathogenesis of lymphoproliferative disorders and propose new treatments for them.

Tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte therapy for lung cancer and its future paradigms

New paper by CIP Members

🔹Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide.

🔹Tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy is an adoptive cell therapy technique, that is being studied for various types of cancer, especially melanoma.

🔹The immunogenic tumor microenvironment of lung cancer makes it a possible candidate for immunotherapy treatments such as TIL therapy.

🔹Currently available results are undecisive on the efficacy and safety of TIL therapy for lung cancer and several clinical trials are in the process of further evaluating this method.

🔹TIL therapy could be enhanced using modifications such as gene editing or incorporating TWS119, although further studies are needed to establish their effectiveness.

New Review Paper on extrusion-based 3D printing by USERN's Regenerative Medicine (ReMed) Group: Applying extrusion-based 3D printing technique accelerates fabricating complex biphasic calcium phosphate-based scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration

🌀 Biphasic calcium phosphates (BCPs) offer a chemically similar biomaterial to the natural bone, which can significantly promote cell proliferation and differentiation and accelerate bone formation and reconstruction.

🌀 Recent advancements and existing challenges in the use of additives for bioink preparation are critically discussed.

🌀 Commercialization and marketing approach, post-processing steps, clinical applications, in-vitro and in-vivo evaluations beside the biological responses are also reviewed.

🌀 Finally, possible strategies and opportunities for the use of BCP toward injured bone regeneration are discussed.

Vascular endothelial growth factor levels in tuberculosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

New Paper by USERN Interest Groups

🌀Changes in endothelial function are implicated in the spread of tuberculosis (TB). Studies suggest a role for the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in TB-related endothelial function changes.

🌀Meta-analysis findings align with the hypothesis that TB may be associated with abnormal vascular function, and both local and systemic levels of VEGF can be used to trace this abnormality.
