An off-duty pilot who tried to cut a plane's engines mid-flight won't serve any more time in prison, a US federal judge has ruled.
Joseph Emerson, a former Alaska Airlines pilot, was sentenced to time served and three years' supervised release by Judge Amy Baggio in the US District Court in Portland, Oregon.
Emerson tried to cut the engines of a Horizon Air flight from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco in October 2023. Flight crew subdued him, and the plane was diverted to Portland with more than 80 people on board.

A black lawyer has won a race harassment case after a co-worker posted a 'racy' picture of a naked Brazilian samba dancer into a workplace group chat.
Rochelle Tapping complained after Cecilie Booth shared the image while she was on holiday in Rio de Janeiro.
Ms Booth sent an image of a female black performer who had her 'buttocks on show' and appeared to only be wearing a 'plume of green feathers protruding from her head'.
'The Brazilian samba is a bit racy', Ms Booth wrote in the chat.
Ms Tapping, Director of Legal and Governance, was the only black person in the WhatsApp chat and said the picture of the 'exposed' dancer created a 'degrading environment' for her.

Net migration to the UK last year was 20% lower than previously thought, according to revised figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The number, the difference between those entering and leaving the country, has been revised down by 86,000 people and now stands at 345,000 in 2024.
The driving factor behind the change is that more British nationals are thought to have emigrated in 2024 than initially recorded, with 100,000 fewer now thought to be living in the UK.

The Guardian has published an article saying they spoke to a former schoolmate of Nigel Farage.
They say he told a Jewish classmate "Hitler was right" and "Gas them", sometimes adding a long hiss "to simulate the sound of the gas showers" .
"I wasn’t his only target. I’d hear him calling other students ‘Paki’ or ‘Wog’, and urging them to ‘go home'"
Farage categorically denies the claims from his ex-classmates at Dulwich College.

Bloomberg reporter Catherine Lucey appeared to ask Trump a question relating to Epstein before the President began waving a finger in her face.
‘Quiet, quiet piggy!’ Trump snapped at the journalist while she stood off camera.

A 13-year-old girl stabbed a woman more than 140 times in a 'premeditated' murder, before texting friends to say she 'wouldn't be in school for a while', a court has heard.
The body of Marta Bednarczyk was found burnt in a fire at a terraced property in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, in March.
But a post-mortem examination found the 43-year-old had suffered horrific injuries to her face, neck and back, inflicted by at least two weapons - likely killing her before the fire started.
Prosecutors said her alleged killer, who initially blamed a third party for the killing, was found nearby with cuts to her hands and taken to hospital – where she was seen smiling by a police officer and a nurse.
It is alleged she 'planned and researched' the attack for weeks beforehand, including looking online at gory videos of people being killed and researching the sentence 'for a 13-year-old convicted of murder.'

A man who attempted to murder his ex-girlfriend ended up killing her sister and her three children in a 'catastrophic' house fire, a court heard today.
Sharaz Ali was 'motivated by jealousy and fuelled by drink and drugs' when he set fire to the home of Bryonie Gawith and her three small children in the early hours of August 21 last year, a trial heard.
Prosecutors say Ali went to the house intending to 'take revenge' on his former partner.
Antonia managed to escape but Bryonie Gawith, 29, and her children Denisty Birtle, nine, Oscar Birtle, five, and 22-month-old Aubree Birtle died in the blaze.
Mohammed Shabir, 45, who had been due to go on trial with them, died of a heart attack last month after collapsing in prison.
The court heard that the men drove 25 minutes from Keighley to Bradford just before 2am, stopping to buy a seven-litre can of petrol on the way.
