A simple ultrasound scan of blood vessels in the neck could help detect men at increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
British researchers said they believe GPs could consider scanning the carotid arteries of patients over 60.
The scan is similar to ultrasound offered during pregnancy and uses a small handheld device that is moved gently over the neck.

The BBC's Amol Rajan was forced to issue a grovelling on-air apology today after being accused of branding benefit claimants 'scroungers'.
The Radio 4 presenter scrambled to clarify his comments after using the term during an interview on the corporation's flagship Today programme.
He rushed to insist he would 'never' describe welfare recipients as 'scroungers' following complaints on social media about his 'degrading language'.
Rajan was interviewing former Labour minister Lord David Blunkett when the episode happened.
During a discussion about yesterday's Budget, Rajan said: 'According to the child poverty action group there are over four million kids in this country in poverty, more than 70 per cent of those are actually in families where people work.
'It's not a question of scroungers on welfare, it's actually working families.'

A Paranoid drug user tried to murder three armed cops in crossbow attack
Michael Ley, 35, from Dundee admitted repeatedly discharging a crossbow towards three officers to the danger of life and attempting to murder them in March this year.
A judge told Ley that he acknowledged he has expressed remorse for his actions and added: "Perhaps the most important mitigating factor is that you now accept that you cannot use cannabis again."

A five-year-old girl who died in hospital four days after having her tonsils removed was her family's "magical little princess", an inquest has heard.
Amber Milnes, from St Just in Roseland, Cornwall, underwent the procedure at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro on 5 April 2023 due to sleep apnoea.
An inquest heard Amber's parents believed she would stay in hospital overnight after the operation as she had a rare condition called cyclical vomiting syndrome.
But Amber was discharged home hours after the procedure and started vomiting in the early morning of 6 April. She was admitted back to the hospital that evening.
Cornwall Coroner's Court heard on Wednesday that Amber had a fatal haemorrhage, likely to have been caused by an infection in the part of her throat where her tonsils had been removed, at around 3am on 9 April.

Deaths of two Oban pensioners killed by mentally ill TV star were 'unavoidable'.
Former SAS soldier Martyn Smith, 73, died after he was brutally attacked by Oskars Rancevs, 32, in the Dunollie area of the Argyll and Bute town on October 1, 2018. Mr Smyth's 75-year-old neighbour John White also died having suffered a heart attack after witnessing the assault.
The FAI heard how in the years before the attack, Rancevs had five acute psychiatric admissions for psychosis.
As a result, he was treated with various prescribed medications.
The probe further heard that after his move to Scotland, he admitted that he disliked having to take medication, both because it reminded him of his illness, and because it impacted his moods and his physical health.
Oskars Rancevs was acquitted of the murder of Mr Smith and of killing neighbour Mr Whyte due to severe mental illness. Instead, he was ordered to be detained indefinitely at the State Hospital in February 2020.
