Government of Venezuela has denounced that the USS Jason Dunham (DDG-109) destroyer of the United States Navy intercepted a Venezuelan fishing boat in the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

According to Foreign Minister Yván Gil, the US ship boarded the vessel with nine crew members "in a hostile manner" 48 nautical miles from La Blanquilla island, occupying it for eight hours.

Gil detailed that 18 personnel with long guns were deployed and prevented communication from the fishermen.

The Venezuelan government described this event as a "military escalation" in the Caribbean and released images of the military ship involved.

The crew of the vessel, which was carrying out authorized tuna fishing operations, was described as "humble fishermen" by the foreign minister, who condemned the incident as an act of aggression in sovereign waters.
