Major Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event expected as we enter 2021

A major Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event is predicted to occur as we start the new year. If the models are correct, we can expect prolonged extremely cold temperatures to affect parts of the northern hemisphere by mid-January.
SSW refers to a rapid rise in temperatures between 10 and 50 km (6.2 - 31 miles) above the surface of our planet.
Several weeks later, we see knock-on effects on the jet stream, which can significantly affect weather in the troposphere -- bringing prolonged extremely cold temperatures such as witnessed in 2018 with an extreme event dubbed 'Beast from the East.'

Two fissures continue to erupt at Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater, Hawai'i

Increased seismicity under Hudson volcano, alert level raised, Chile

The National Geology and Mining Service of Chile (SERNAGEOMIN) has raised the alert level for Cerro Hudson volcano from Green to Yellow (2 of 4) on December 22, 2020. The last eruption of this volcano took place in 2011 (VEI 2). This volcano has a history of VEI 6 and VEI 5 eruptions, with the last VEI 5 from August 8 to October 27, 1991 -- this was Chile's second-largest eruption of the 20th century.

The decision to raise the alert level was made after the evaluation of activity from December 1 to 15, which showed increased seismicity under the volcano -- volcano-tectonic, long-period, and hybrid earthquakes were detected.

Chinese Province Reports Power Outages After Australian Coal Ban

Residents in several cities across China’s southern Guangzhou province have reported power outages over the past few weeks, with some blaming the electricity cuts on Beijing’s recent ban on Australian coal imports, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported on Monday.

Guangzhou cities including Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhuhai, and the Baiyun district of the provincial capital, also named Guangzhou, have experienced temporary power outages recently, according to RFA. In its report, the U.S. government-funded broadcaster cited photos and videos posted to Chinese social media platforms such as Weibo allegedly showing parts of the cities in near-total darkness. The blackouts affected Guangzhou cities most recently on December 21 around midnight.
