Chinese Province Reports Power Outages After Australian Coal Ban

Residents in several cities across China’s southern Guangzhou province have reported power outages over the past few weeks, with some blaming the electricity cuts on Beijing’s recent ban on Australian coal imports, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported on Monday.

Guangzhou cities including Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhuhai, and the Baiyun district of the provincial capital, also named Guangzhou, have experienced temporary power outages recently, according to RFA. In its report, the U.S. government-funded broadcaster cited photos and videos posted to Chinese social media platforms such as Weibo allegedly showing parts of the cities in near-total darkness. The blackouts affected Guangzhou cities most recently on December 21 around midnight.

In some areas the coastline is about to retract hundreds of metres a year or more. Can you imagine building new piers and harbours that fast? By the time they are ready, the sea will have moved kilometres or tens of kilometres further away. Coastal promenades will soon be landlocked. The beaches of today will be the sand ridges stranded in barren plains of tomorrow.
The drop will also affect lowland rivers and deltas around the Caspian Sea. Once-fertile plains will become too dry for watermelon and rice farming to continue.

“It isn’t inherently awful that YouTube uses AI to recommend video for you, because if the AI is well tuned it can help you get what you want. This would be amazing,” Chaslot told TNW. “But the problem is that the AI isn’t built to help you get what you want — it’s built to get you addicted to YouTube. Recommendations were designed to waste your time.”

Chaslot explains that the metric the algorithm uses to determine a ‘successful’ recommendations is watch time. This might be great for a company trying to sell ads, but doesn’t necessarily reflect what the user wants — and has grave side-effects.
