Russia and China are among the powers eyeing up the region for both the shortened shipping lanes and the natural resources available. A new Arctic shipping route could save time for the shipping of goods, and reduce the cost of shipping goods between Europe and Asia by up to a third. Four main maritime routes have been identified to cut through the Arctic: the Northwest Passage, the Northern Sea Route, the Transpolar Sea Route, and the Arctic Bridge Route.
