The expansion of maritime routes through the Arctic region could soon be possible due to warming temperatures and thawing sea ice. Russia and China are among the powers eyeing up the region for both the shortened shipping lanes and the natural resources available. A new Arctic shipping route could save time for the shipping of goods, and reduce the cost of shipping goods between Europe and Asia by up to a third. Four main maritime routes have been identified to cut through the Arctic: the Northwest Passage, the Northern Sea Route, the Transpolar Sea Route, and the Arctic Bridge Route.

The US has urged India to overcome bureaucratic hurdles in plans to acquire large armed drones worth between $2bn and $3bn. India is in the process of developing its own large armed drones, with a focus on high-altitude, long-endurance aircraft, and is seeking US technology in this area. Other nations that have sought to arm US drones include Italy, the Netherlands and Taiwan. Moving to arms medium-altitude, long-endurance drones is becoming increasingly common for nations in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
