Once catalytic converters were mandated to be fitted to all new vehicles many years ago, and diesel exhaust particulate filters, too, the air can’t get any cleaner and is in any case no longer injurious.
I worked on ozone and respiratory system injury in the late 1980s. We found that levels of ozone capable of producing damage was very much higher than the then prevailing levels.
Also, there isn’t one simple threshold because there’s a dynamic equilibrium between oxidant stressors in inhaled air and the availability of free radical quenching antioxidants in airway surface liquid. By the way, I slightly know Professor Frank Kelly. He was doing related work back then and it looks like he still is, despite the tide having gone out entirely on his niche field a very long time ago.
Why would he say the things he’s said about air pollution? Other colleagues at Imperial are to issue some kind of statement of disagreement with Kelly. Good on them.
