"A tiny part of me sympathises with Johnson here. Though he is lazy, devious and venal, he is not a natural tyrant. When he imposed those lockdowns and all the pettifogging rules and regulations that went with them, we can be pretty sure that he did so under extreme duress. We know this because he privately briefed newspaper editors at the time that he was effectively in a hostage situation, that his orders were coming from above and that he had no option but to obey."

"Hurricanes batter our coasts. Wildfires rage across the American West. Glaciers collapse in the Arctic. Politicians, activists, and the media espouse a common message: climate change is destroying the planet, and we must take drastic action immediately to stop it. Children panic about their future, and adults wonder if it is even ethical to bring new life into the world.

"Enough, argues bestselling author Bjorn Lomborg. Climate change is real, but it’s not the apocalyptic threat that we’ve been told it is. Projections of Earth’s imminent demise are based on bad science and even worse economics. In panic, world leaders have committed to wildly expensive but largely ineffective policies that hamper growth and crowd out more pressing investments in human capital, from immunization to education."

🇮🇱🇱🇧Israeli intelligence has been supplying Lebanon with radios loaded with explosives since 2015 - Mossad has come up with a system that allows you to read messages only by holding the device with both hands, which means losing both hands

Mossad programmed the pagers so that the message could only be read by pressing two buttons - this means that a person would use both hands and, having injured them, would be unable to fight, The WP writes, citing Israeli sources. As the publication found out, Mossad had been planning the operation since 2022, and since 2015 it began to supply the first radios with explosives to Lebanon.

For nine years, the Israelis were content to eavesdrop on Hezbollah, reserving the option of turning the radios into bombs in the event of a future crisis. During that time, they perfected the design so that the explosives were undetectable. The bomb component was so carefully hidden that it was virtually impossible to detect, even if the device was disassembled.

Hezbollah even ended up indirectly paying the Israelis for bombs that killed or wounded many of its agents and civilians, since Apollo outsourced the production of the gadgets— the devices were actually assembled in Israel.

Chinese bomb YJ-1000-1
A laser-guided 1.000kg bunker-buster type device.
The video is very good and shows the enormous penetration of modern anti-bunker bombs.
We saw them used the other day by Israel in Lebanon.
We could add this video to what I have been explaining about why the hangar-bunkers were no longer used by the end of the Cold War.

"The Gouth of Hastings was fought at Sandlake Hill in mid-October, 1066. There, the English, under King Harold, won a breme and athel seyer over the Normans, led by Earl William ‘the Unrightluster’, a man who was willing to spill a swith great muchness of blood to fulfil his yearning for the English highsettle, wealth and his own wulder.

"So the author David Cowley imagined an alternative history in How We'd Talk if the English had Won in 1066, a short primer on what the language would look like if Harold II had not died at the famous (breme) battle (gouth) of Hastings - and English had not undergone Frenchification following the Norman Conquest."

That reminds me of "Uncleftish Beholding," Poul Anderson's denoscription of atomic theory written in English purged of its non-Germanic words and adopting Germanic-style neologisms.

A Robotic Hand That Detaches and Crawls—But Don’t Be Alarmed, It’s All Part of the Plan!

Engineers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and MIT have unveiled a five-fingered robotic hand that can detach from its main manipulator and crawl independently. Operating autonomously, the hand can grasp objects beyond the reach of the primary robot, then return and reattach itself.

Each finger of the robotic hand has four degrees of freedom and can bend in both directions relative to the plane of the hand. The developers used a genetic algorithm to determine the optimal number of fingers and their placement on the cylindrical palm.

In the basic configuration, the autonomous hand uses only two fingers to grasp and hold one, two, or even three objects, while the remaining fingers are employed for locomotion.

This innovation could be extremely useful for working in confined spaces.

Remember when the TV told you hospitals were full to capacity, and medical staff were working around the clock to defeat a terrifying killer virus, despite having the time to spend hours choreographing, rehearsing and filming cringeworthy dance routines? 🤡

❗️This is something new!

🇺🇦🇷🇺 In Odessa, a woman tried to hang a Russian flag on the pedestal of the monument to Catherine II, which was demolished at the end of 2022.

The video is published by local channels. Aggressive passers-by began to insult her and snatched the flag from her hands.

❗️After that, she was not afraid to say: "Akhmat - force! Russia - power!"

It is reported that the woman was detained by the police.
