The Council of Ulema of the Russian Muslim Spiritual Directorate announced that it was withdrawing a fatwa permitting polygamy for Muslims due to the "reaction of Russian society" and the Prosecutor General's Office. This was stated by its chairman Shamil Alyautdinov.

Earlier, the RF Prosecutor General's Office warned about the illegality of allowing polygamy for Muslims in Russia and submitted a proposal to eliminate the violation of the law to the Chairman of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Russia.
