The ancient practice of speaking simply and thinking carefully
"When Philip wrote to them, "If I invade Laconia, I will drive you all out of house and home," they only wrote back, "If." And when king Demetrius was indignant and cried out, "The Lacedæmonians have only sent me one ambassador," the ambassador was not frightened but said, "Yes, one to one man." Certainly among the ancients men of few words were admired. So the Amphictyones did not write extracts from the Iliad or Odyssey, or the Pæans of Pindar, in the temple of Pythian Apollo at Delphi, but "Know thyself," "Not too much of anything," and "Be a surety, trouble is near;" so much did they admire compactness and simplicity of speech, combining brevity with shrewdness of mind. (Plutarch)

Jacques_Ellul-Propaganda.pdf
42.4 MB
Jacques Ellul argues that propaganda is not merely a political tool but a structural feature of modern technological society, inseparable from the systems that sustain it. Rather than relying on outright lies, modern propaganda works through selective truths, half truths, and manipulation of context. He distinguishes between agitation propaganda, which incites action or rebellion, and integration propaganda, which conditions individuals to conform to social norms and technological systems.
Ellul contends that modern education prepares people for propaganda by supplying fragmented, secondhand information, training them to hold opinions without direct understanding. Intellectuals are especially vulnerable because they consume the most information, feel pressure to opine, and mistake information volume for independent thought. In an atomized society, propaganda fulfills psychological needs for belonging and purpose, replacing lost communal bonds.
He warns that propaganda creates false needs and satisfactions, producing emotional and ideological dependency. No ideology can employ propaganda harmlessly; once introduced, it becomes self sustaining and irreversible. Ellul concludes that propaganda is more dangerous than visible threats because it reshapes perception itself, becoming the environment in which modern humans live rather than a force they merely encounter.

TIL that in the Indiana Gas Boom of the 1880s, 90% of the gas was wasted in enormous “flambeaux” torch displays for advertising and public amusement. Within a couple decades, the gas ran out and the wells lost pressure, which also prevented most of the oil from being extracted.
