"Camillus was laying siege to the Etrusan city of Falerii, which was located about 31 miles northeast of Rome; it is now known as Fabrica di Roma. Camillus’s army was encamped outside the walls of the city, and the siege had gone on longer than expected. Then a strange and fateful incident occurred. One day, a schoolteacher led a group of pupils outside the city walls to the Roman camp. The students represented, of course, the future of the city. The teacher’s belief was that, if he offered up his students as hostages to the Romans, the city’s leadership would be more likely to capitulate to the Romans. He was, in effect, exploiting the youth to satisfy his own selfish, cowardly desire to see the fighting end. And he was willing to betray his people’s future–their children–to achieve this despicable end."

❗️🇷🇺🏭The West will not be able to revive nuclear power without Rosatom, The Wall Street Journal reports
🔹Russia is the main supplier of fuel for nuclear power plants around the world. In 2022, Washington alone paid Moscow $1 billion. The dependence of the U.S. economy on Russian fuel has become "insurmountable," the newspaper said.
🔹For example, TerraPower does not know how to build a new type of nuclear power plant in Wyoming. The main reason is that Rosatom is the only source of fuel.

Female voting power: the contribution of women’s suffrage to the growth of social spending in Western Europe (1869–1960)
Women’s suffrage was a major event in the history of democratization in Western Europe and elsewhere. Public choice theory predicts that the demand for publicly funded social spending is systematically higher where women have and use the right to vote. Using historical data from six Western European countries for the period 1869–1960, we provide evidence that social spending out of GDP increased by 0.6–1.2% in the short-run as a consequence of women’s suffrage, while the long-run effect is three to eight times larger. (Aidt & Dallal, 2008)

Did Women's Suffrage Change the Size and Scope of Government?
This paper examines the growth of government during this century as a result of giving women the right to vote. Using cross-sectional time-series data for 1870–1940, we examine state government expenditures and revenue as well as voting by U.S. House and Senate state delegations and the passage of a wide range of different state laws. Suffrage coincided with immediate increases in state government expenditures and revenue and more liberal voting patterns for federal representatives, and these effects continued growing over time as more women took advantage of the franchise. (Lott Jr & Kenny, 1999)
