Google Expands AI Overviews to Six More Countries
Google is extending its AI-powered search summaries to India, Brazil, Japan, the UK, Indonesia, and Mexico, with local language support. The company is also revamping how it displays source material links, adding a view showing site icons above the AI overview. Google is testing in-text links within AI overviews to drive more traffic to external sites.
For India specifically, Google is introducing a Hindi-English toggle and a "Listen" feature for AI-generated responses. The company claims AI Overviews are leading users to visit a greater diversity of websites for complex queries, with higher quality clicks to these sites.

Google Messages is adding support for dual SIM RCS, once again
Back in January, there were some reports of dual SIM RCS support in Google Messages, but it was eventually pulled. The capability looks to be rolling back out again, with one new report from a Messages beta user on the Nothing Phone 2.
There are two SIM cards “Connected” in RCS setting, while there’s a new “Backup format for sending attachments” setting that says “SMS with a link.” This sounds like the Google Photos video upload feature that was quietly removed last year. A return would be unexpected.

[Brazil-only] Problems downloading Proton and other VPNs from the iOS app store
Proton VPN users in Brazil are experiencing issues downloading the app from the iOS App Store, along with multiple other VPNs in the Brazilian App Store. Proton said that the issue is not on their end but likely with Apple's App Store. The issue is either accidental, or Apple is secretly implementing a censorship order.
As a workaround for iOS users, Proton suggests trying the iOS beta version via Testflight, or a manual WireGuard setup can be used to access the VPN servers. Proton VPN apps are still available on all other platforms in Brazil, and other Proton apps like Proton Mail, Drive, and Pass remain unaffected.

Google Play will no longer pay to discover vulnerabilities in popular Android apps
Google has decided to wind down the Google Play Security Reward Program. In an email to participating developers, such as Sean Pesce, the company announced that the GPSRP will end on August 31st, after nearly seven years.
The reason they gave is that the program has seen a decrease in the number of actionable vulnerabilities reported. Google credits this success to the “overall increase in the Android OS security posture and feature hardening efforts.”

Amazon considers moving Amazon Pay into a standalone app in India
Amazon is considering launching a standalone app for its payments service, Amazon Pay, in India to increase its usage and recognition. Currently integrated within Amazon's e-commerce app, Amazon Pay offers various financial services but hasn't gained significant traction, ranking sixth in the market.
The idea of decoupling the service has been under consideration for about a year, but the plan is not yet finalized. Amazon faces tough competition in India, with rivals like Walmart's PhonePe and Google Pay dominating the market.

Instagram is testing vertical profile grids — and knows that might mess up layouts
Instagram is testing a change to profile grids, switching squares to vertical rectangles to better fit modern content. The test is limited, and Instagram will consider user feedback before a wider rollout.

Here’s a trannoscription of Mosseri’s story:
We’re actually testing a vertical grid, for those of you who haven’t seen it yet, for your profile, instead of squares. Now, squares are from way back in the day when you can only upload square photos to Instagram. I know this can be annoying for some of you who really spent a lot of time curating and making sure everything lines up, but I would really like to do better by the content today. The vast majority of what is uploaded to Instagram today is vertical. It’s either 4 by 3 in a photo or 9 by 16 in a video, and cropping it down to square is pretty brutal. So, I’m hoping we can figure out a way to manage this transition.

Amsterdam municipality bans Telegram on work phones for Gov't Employees
The municipality of Amsterdam has banned its civil servants from using Telegram on their work phones over the criminal activities on the app and the risk of espionage. The city implemented the ban at the end of April but did not publicly communicate about it.
Telegram is a “safe haven for hackers, cybercriminals, and drug dealers,” said a spokesperson for Amsterdam’s IT alderman Alexander Scholtes. No other Dutch municipalities have banned Telegram, though there are nationwide concerns about the app.

Krutrim Cloud: Free for Developers, but What Actually Works? (1/2)
At the Ola Sankalp 2024 event, Bhavish Aggarwal announced that Krutrim Cloud would be free for developers until Diwali, so I tried it out.
So far, only Language Translation/Interpretation and models like HuggingFace, Llama, etc. work, which consume very little credits (consumed ₹0.50 for me). But here’s the thing: their "krutrim/Krutrim-spectre-v2" model is probably just GPT-3 with a new name. They didn’t even bother changing the parts where it admits to being GPT-3 made by OpenAI. The responses are pretty bad as well, and it also hallucinates and provides incorrect answers. Even their Python documentation still uses the OpenAI library, just with their own base URL.
Here are some prompts and their responses:
The translation service? It only supports a few languages, and the only option is their own model called "Krutrim-Translate," which is probably another GPT-3 rehash. As for their Interpretation service, it has four features: Language Detection, Extraction, Sentiment Analysis, and Summarization, which seem to work fine.
It’s just disappointing to see how Ola calls this as "India's own AI." Is this because Krutrim is currently in Beta?
No hate intended. This is my own experience and I apologise if I posted some incorrect information.

Krutrim Cloud: Free for Developers, but What Actually Works? (2/2)
Talking about Compute, which is basically their Virtual Machines:
After signing up and receiving ₹10,000 in free credits, I tried Krutrim’s VMs. I created two of the cheapest options, a CPU-1x-4GB and an A100-40GB-NVLINK-1x, around 9 PM IST on 18/08/2024. Both VMs are still stuck at "In Progress" and never got created. Now, every VM option shows "Notify me," with some marked as Low Availability and others completely Out of Stock. The only thing I can do with my stuck VMs is "Terminate Machine" since they won’t start.
I’m not alone in this. @TejasXD had a similar experience. He created a CPU instance, CPU-1x-4GB, but even after 24 hours, the VM didn’t start, and the VMs suddenly disappeared in "My Machines". @Raveen2k3 also faced the same issue, but he was unable to add his SSH key, and after a few tries, he was able to add it. His VM is also stuck at "In Progress" after finally managing to add his SSH key.
To double-check, @ardwivedi16 created a new account, and sure enough, no VMs were available, all of them showed the "Notify Me" option, except Bare Metal GPUs which show the "Reserve Now" option. I doubt if they would actually start though, lol.
I wonder, what are the free credits actually for?
No hate intended. This is my own experience and I apologise if I posted some incorrect information.

TL;DR: Krutrim Cloud: Free for Developers, but What Actually Works?
Krutrim Cloud has provided free credits, ₹10000, till Diwali. Only Language Translation/Interpretation and a few models actually work. Their "krutrim/Krutrim-spectre-v2" model is essentially GPT-3, which also gives incorrect information and hallucinates as well. Their Language translation service, however, works fine, which has only a few languages and uses their own "Krutrim-Translate" model.
Finally, their Compute service for virtual machines through VMs has been nothing but a mess. They give ₹10,000 in free credits, but the VMs are just stuck at "In Progress". (Confirmed with @TejasXD and @Raveen2k3). Now (at the time of writing this post), no VMs except Bare Metal GPU VMs are available to create. (Confirmed with @ardwivedi16)
To summarise, Krutrim's own model feels more like a rebranded GPT-3 than an AI made in India. Their Compute service is already wrong on so many levels making it hard to ascertain what value they offer.
No hate intended. This is my own experience and I apologise if I posted some incorrect information.
