Krutrim Cloud: Free for Developers, but What Actually Works? (2/2)

Talking about Compute, which is basically their Virtual Machines:

After signing up and receiving ₹10,000 in free credits, I tried Krutrim’s VMs. I created two of the cheapest options, a CPU-1x-4GB and an A100-40GB-NVLINK-1x, around 9 PM IST on 18/08/2024. Both VMs are still stuck at "In Progress" and never got created. Now, every VM option shows "Notify me," with some marked as Low Availability and others completely Out of Stock. The only thing I can do with my stuck VMs is "Terminate Machine" since they won’t start.

I’m not alone in this. @TejasXD had a similar experience. He created a CPU instance, CPU-1x-4GB, but even after 24 hours, the VM didn’t start, and the VMs suddenly disappeared in "My Machines". @Raveen2k3 also faced the same issue, but he was unable to add his SSH key, and after a few tries, he was able to add it. His VM is also stuck at "In Progress" after finally managing to add his SSH key.

To double-check, @ardwivedi16 created a new account, and sure enough, no VMs were available, all of them showed the "Notify Me" option, except Bare Metal GPUs which show the "Reserve Now" option. I doubt if they would actually start though, lol.

I wonder, what are the free credits actually for?

No hate intended. This is my own experience and I apologise if I posted some incorrect information.

Krutrim Cloud: Free for Developers, but What Actually Works? (2/2) Talking about Compute, which is basically their Virtual Machines: After signing up and receiving ₹10,000 in free credits, I tried Krutrim’s VMs. I created two of the cheapest options, a CPU…
TL;DR: Krutrim Cloud: Free for Developers, but What Actually Works?

Krutrim Cloud has provided free credits, ₹10000, till Diwali. Only Language Translation/Interpretation and a few models actually work. Their "krutrim/Krutrim-spectre-v2" model is essentially GPT-3, which also gives incorrect information and hallucinates as well. Their Language translation service, however, works fine, which has only a few languages and uses their own "Krutrim-Translate" model.

Finally, their Compute service for virtual machines through VMs has been nothing but a mess. They give ₹10,000 in free credits, but the VMs are just stuck at "In Progress". (Confirmed with @TejasXD and @Raveen2k3). Now (at the time of writing this post), no VMs except Bare Metal GPU VMs are available to create. (Confirmed with @ardwivedi16)

To summarise, Krutrim's own model feels more like a rebranded GPT-3 than an AI made in India. Their Compute service is already wrong on so many levels making it hard to ascertain what value they offer.

No hate intended. This is my own experience and I apologise if I posted some incorrect information.

The popular browser extension Bypass Paywalls Clean (BPC), which allowed users to access subnoscription content without paying, has been shut down along with 3,879 related repositories on GitHub. The News Media Alliance (NMA), representing 2,200 publishers, filed a DMCA takedown notice against BPC for violating anti-circumvention provisions by enabling access to copyrighted content protected by paywalls.

GitHub removed the repositories after determining that BPC's technology breached these legal protections.

WhatsApp testing a feature that will block messages from unknown numbers

WhatsApp's latest beta update for Android (v2.24.17.24) is working on a new feature to block messages from unknown accounts. This will protect users from spam and potentially harmful communications by automatically blocking messages if they exceed a certain volume.

This feature is also expected to improve device performance by reducing the strain caused by a high influx of unwanted messages. Although the feature is not yet available to beta testers, it is set to be included in a future app update.

Microsoft blocks trick that lets you install Windows 11 on older PCs

If you use /product server as a launch parameter for the Windows 11 setup file, it would treat your PC as a server and bypass the hardware compatibility lock. Starting with the recently released Build 27686 for Windows 11 Insiders, this option is disabled.

The trick still works in the live version of Windows 11 version 24H2. However, in a future version that’s based on the Insider build, the trick will probably no longer be possible.

Microsoft OneNote Prepares for Android 15 Lock Screen Note-Taking

An APK teardown of Microsoft OneNote beta version 16.0.17928.20054 reveals strings suggesting preparation for Android 15's upcoming lock screen note-taking feature. These strings reference enabling OneNote as the "Default Notes App" and adding a lock screen note-taking shortcut.

While Google Keep is already prepared for this feature, OneNote's integration is still in progress. Despite the presence of these strings, OneNote currently doesn't appear as an option for the default notes app on Android 14. With Android 15's release expected this fall, Microsoft likely has a few more weeks to finalize OneNote's support for this new functionality.

Microsoft finally officially confirms it's killing Windows Control Panel sometime soon

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Control Panel will be deprecated soon and replaced by the modern Settings app, which is seen to mark the end of an era for the feature first introduced in 1985 with Windows 1.0. Despite rumors about its replacement which started circulating in 2011, it has persisted because of compatibility reasons. The company is now slowly moving all system settings into the more streamlined and user-friendly Settings app.

Along with that, Microsoft has detailed other in-built Windows configuration tools such as Task Manager, Registry Editor, Local Group Policy Editor, etc. which are important to power users.

Microsoft breaks dual-boot Windows and Linux PCs with security update sent to wrong systems

A recent Microsoft security update, intended to fix a two-year-old vulnerability in the GRUB boot loader, accidentally affected dual-boot systems running both Windows and Linux, when secure boot was enforced. This caused these systems to fail to boot, displaying an error message stating, "something has gone seriously wrong."

The issue arose because the update, which wasn't supposed to be sent to dual-boot systems, was mistakenly deployed to them. Several Linux distributions, such as Linux Mint, Puppy Linux, Ubuntu, and Zorin OS, are affected.

A workaround involves either disabling secure boot temporarily or deleting the problematic SBAT data.

Microsoft will try the data-scraping Windows Recall feature again in October

Microsoft plans to reintroduce its controversial Recall feature to Windows Insider PCs in October. Recall, a service that continuously captures screenshots and text data of user activity, faced criticism for privacy and security concerns in its initial preview.

Microsoft delayed the launch of its Recall feature, initially set for the Copilot+ PC release in July, to rework it before testing with Windows Insiders.

The revised version will include encryption for the database, require Windows Hello authentication, and be off by default. Microsoft emphasizes that security remains their top priority.

Under DMA probe, Apple Tweaks EU Browser Choice Screens, Expands and Makes Default Apps Deletable

Apple is making changes to iOS and iPadOS to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA). Users in the EU will see a redesigned browser choice screen, where they must scroll through a full list of available browsers. The top 12 browsers in their country will be displayed in a random order.

Apple is also introducing a centralized setting that allows EU users to view and manage default apps more easily. This setting will now include options for functions like dialing, messaging, and translating, among others.

Later this year, EU users will be able to delete more default apps, including the App Store, Messages, Photos, Camera, and Safari. If needed, these apps can be re-downloaded from the App Store or through the Settings app.

17-Year-old Student Exposes Germany’s ‘Secret’ Pirate Site Blocklist

In Germany, ISPs are blocking pirate sites without revealing the domains, under a voluntary agreement with copyright holders. To counter this, 17-year-old Damian and his friends launched CUIIliste.de, a site exposing these blocked domains.

The portal lists 275 domains and criticizes the lack of court oversight in these blocking efforts, managed by the Clearing Body for Copyright on the Internet (CUII). It also provides tips on bypassing the blocks using third-party DNS resolvers.

The CUII blocks domains. Which ones exactly? The CUII does not reveal this. But don’t worry – that’s why we’re here. We’ll do our best to collect and publish all blocked domains.

Apple splits App Store team in two, introduces new leadership

Apple has restructured its App Store team into two divisions due to EU regulations. One division will manage the Apple-run App Store, and the other will oversee alternative app stores in the EU. Matt Fischer, who led the App Store for over a decade, is leaving, with Carson Oliver and Ann Thai taking over the new divisions.

In a email, Fischer wrote the following:
After 21 years at Apple, I've made the decision to step away from our incredible company. This has been on my mind for some time, and as we are also reorganizing the team to better manage new challenges and opportunities, now is the right moment to pass the baton to two outstanding leaders on my team—Carson Oliver and Ann Thai—both of whom are more than ready for this next
chapter.

Phil Schiller will continue to oversee both. This change is part of Apple's response to the EU's Digital Markets Act, which aims to reduce app store monopolies.

Telegram messaging app CEO Durov arrested in France

Pavel Durov, the Russian-French billionaire and Telegram founder, was arrested Saturday evening around 8:00 p.m. (1800 GMT) at Bourget Airport near Paris. Durov, who was traveling from Azerbaijan, was detained due to an arrest warrant tied to a French police investigation. The arrest plunged Toncoin (TON) 13%.

Authorities are probing Telegram’s alleged lack of moderation, which they claim has allowed criminal activities to flourish. The platform’s growing popularity has drawn the attention of several European countries, including France, over security concerns.

Durov will probably face 20 years in prison. He is expected to appear before a judge tonight, with potential charges looming on Sunday.

Happy 33rd Birthday, Linux! 🎉

Today is August 25th, which means that Linux turns 33 years old! 💃

On August 25th, 1991, Linus Benedict Torvalds, then a 21-year-old Finnish student, made an announcement on the comp.os.minix newsgroup. He mentioned that he was working on a free operating system for 386(486) AT clones—just as a "hobby," which turned into something huge, used by millions of computer users around the globe.

Hello everybody out there using minix –
I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I’d like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).
I’ve currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I’ll get something practical within a few months, and I’d like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won’t promise I’ll implement them
Linus
PS. Yes – it’s free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that’s all I have :-(.

Telegram being investigated in India, could face a ban

The Indian government is currently investigating Telegram for involvement in criminal activities such as extortion and gambling. This comes after Pavel Durov got arrested.

The investigation, led by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is particularly focused on Telegram's peer-to-peer communications and its connection to illegal activities, including the UGC-NEET paper leak. Depending on the findings of this probe, Telegram could face a ban in the country.

Telegram is facing difficulties because they have no presence in India, which makes it challenging to investigate for the authorities. Although the platform is compliant with the IT rules, it has come under scrutiny for allowing criminal activities to go unchecked.
