Call for applications: 3 PhD Scholarships in social ontology / social cognition

Deadline: 9 June 2025

Salary: 16.000 Euro per academic year (tax-free), plus research expenses

Duration: 3 years, from 1 October 2025

Requirements: noscript of Master’s degree or equivalent, before 31 October 2025

The scholarships are funded by the University of Milan on the project FIS2 Advanced Grant “The Normative Roots of Social Kinds”. The recipients will work with Professor Francesco Guala and/or Professor John Michael on practices of social classification and the normative basis of joint action. We welcome applications from candidates with a background in philosophy and/or social cognition. ‘The Human Mind and Its Explanations: Language, Brain and Reasoning’ (HuME) is a PhD programme jointly run by the University of Milan, IUSS Pavia, and Scuola Normale Superiore (Pisa). Dear all,

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join a project in the field of cognitive neuroscience / cognitive modeling. The PhD position is part of the project "Understanding intra- and interindividual variation in human metacognition", involving in particular:

- Time-resolved neural correlates of confidence (EEG)
- Computational modeling of confidence
- Relationship between computational parameters of metacognition and personality

Requirements:
- Master degree in psychology, (cognitive/computational) neuroscience, computer science, physics or related subject
- Good to very good programming skills (e.g. Python/R/Matlab)
- Excellent writing and communication skills (English)

In addition, experience in one or more of the following fields is beneficial:
- EEG
- Cognitive modeling
- Experience in metacognition / confidence research
- Open science (preregistration, open code, etc)
- Web-based experiments
