🇬🇷 Today is the national anniversary of the Hellenic Revolution, a war fought from 1821 to 1829 that led to our country’s independence a year later.
It’s one of the most renowned revolutions of history at a period of strict monarchies and multinational empires. The revolutionaries managed to establish their rule in southern areas and despite the struggles in 1826, the Battle of Navarino changed the tide towards our side. The effort inspired other national determination movements in the future, including the revolutions in 1848.
Happy anniversary to our compatriots!

🇬🇷🗺 Battle Spots of the Hellenic Revolution (1821-1829)
📝 Source: HNDGS
📝 NOTE: The battles in the Moldova and the naval battle in Egypt are not included.
📃 The Revolution took place mainly in the Peloponnese and Central Greece because it was far from the capital Constantinople. Filiki Etairia (Friendly Society) initially planned to start riots in Constantinople but ultimately aborted the plan so as not to massacre the thousands of Greeks in Constantinople. Another reason for choosing the southern regions was the fact that the Ottomans had open fronts in Iran and were also facing the rebellion of Ali Pasha of Ioannina, as well as the geographical opposite of the Danubian principalities of Moldavia where the leader of Filiki Etairia, Alexandros Ypsilantis, had raised the banner of the Revolution.
