Their reasoning was that the issue represented the obscenity of a perverted minority. When Guattari returned from Montreal, he was thus charged with violating public obscenity laws. At his trial, he refused to give up the writers of the issue, proclaimed it completely indefensible, said that he would — if he were still a young militant — avoid the trial and simply throw loose change at the judge, and threatened to have someone testify about masturbation for three hours.
His punishment was 300 francs, a couple thousand dollars in today’s money. He never paid the fine.
