퇴사 이후, 부지런히 사람들을 만나면서 내가 만나는 이들의 특징을 하나 알게 됐다. 그것은 내가 만나고 싶어하는 사람들은 다들 자기만의 '세계'랄 것을 갖고 있는 사람들이라는 점이다. 달리 말하면, 자기만의 '힘이 있는 마음'이 있어서, 그 마음을 중심으로 자기 삶에 보호막을 칠 줄 아는 사람들이라고도 할 수 있다.

자기 마음의 힘이 없는 사람은, 그냥 타인들에게 휩쓸려 산다. 남들이 좋다는 것만을 따라가기 바쁘고, 남들과의 우열을 나누는 비교의 늪에서 빠져나올 방법을 모른다. 항상 타인들을 신경 쓰면서, 남들이 자신을 우습게 보지는 않을지, 내가 남들보다 잘나거나 못나지는 않은지 신경쓰며, 타인과 '같은 레이스'에서 서로를 비교하기 바쁘다. 그들에게 벤츠가 아닌 소나타를 타는 삶, 에르메스가 아닌 샤넬을 매는 것은 무조건 전자보다 후자가 열등한 것이다.

마찬가지로 판사가 아닌 변호사의 삶, 강남이 아닌 강북의 삶, 골프 치는 삶이 아닌 동네 공원을 달리는 삶은 역시 더 열등한 것이다. 크리스마스 연휴에 100만 원짜리 호텔을 잡고 오마카세를 즐기는 삶은, 집에서 가족끼리 멜론을 깎아먹고 작은 트리를 꾸미고 노는 삶보다 '이견의 여지 없이' 우월한 것이다. 개인적으로 나는 그런 사고관이 머릿속에 너무 깊이 박혀버린 사람들과는 한 시간 이상 마주앉아 숨쉬기가 어렵다. 그 상상력의 부재, 마음의 빈곤함, 획일화되어 거의 기계가 되어버린 비교와 피해의식의 마음이 견디기 어렵다.

내가 퇴사 이후에 찾아다니며 약속잡고 만나며 두어시간씩, 혹은 그 이상씩 마주앉아 이야기 나누는 사람들 중에는 그런 사람이 하나도 없었다는 걸 깨달았다. 그들에게는 모두 저마다의 진지한 세계와 마음이랄 게 있어서, 그 바깥의 현실이나 비교의식의 레이스로 점철된 '타자의 세계'가 침범하지 못하는 벽이 있다. 이를테면, 그들은 피곤한 모든 피해의식적인 현실 보다는 책 한 권 읽는 밤, 산 속을 거니는 일, 자기만의 세계를 창작하는 일에 몰두하는 걸 더 좋아한다.

언젠가 나는, 세상의 수많은 문제들이 결국 '책 한 권 읽는 밤'을 사랑할 줄 모르는 마음에서 오는지도 모른다고 쓴 적이 있다. 비유적인 이야기였지만, 핵심은 다르지 않다고 생각한다. 사실, 그렇게 탐욕스럽게 돈과 권력을 갈구하는 사람들이 결국 무엇을 하는지 보면, 그닥 대단한 걸 하는 것도 아니다. 기껏해야 몰래 룸쌀롱에서 술 먹고 유흥업소에서 마약하다가 걸려서 이혼당하거나, 부하직원 성추행하고, 골프 몇 번 치러 다니는 것 외에 그리 대단한 걸 한다는 얘길 들어본 적이 없다. 만약 그가 그냥 책 한 권 읽는 걸 무엇보다 사랑할 줄 아는 마음이 있었다면, 그렇게 삶을 허비할 필요도 없었을 것이다.

올해 나는 세상으로부터, 그 세상의 여러 사람들로부터 너무도 많은 걸 배웠다는 생각이 든다. 그러면서 내게 좋은 사람들, 그러니까 나와 맞는 사람들과 그렇지 않은 사람들을 구별할 줄도 알게 되었다. 나아가 삶에서 중요한 것은, 내가 세계를 공유하고 싶은 사람들만을 곁에 두며 삶을 확장해가는 일이라는 것도 더 명확히 배웠다. 삶을 자기가 원하는, 좋은 방식으로 만들어가는 방법은 의외로 간단하다. 그 방식을 해치는 사람들을 걸러내고, 그 방식에 도움을 주는 이들의 손을 붙잡는 것이다.

올해 내게는 산타들이 있었다. 그들은 저마다의 징글벨을 들려주었고, 나는 그 속에서 조금 더 뚜렷하게 나의 마음과 삶을 알게 되었다. 새해에는 조금 더 명료해진 마음으로 삶을 살아갈 수 있을 거라 믿어진다. 이 믿어짐이 묘하고 따뜻하고 강렬하다.

유럽 미술사에서 17세기에 많이 그려진 장면이 있다. 두 명의 여성이 한 남자를 붙잡고 목을 베는 그림. 아마 한 번쯤은 본 적 있겠지만, 적군의 장수가 쉬고 있을 때 칼을 들고 들어가 죽이는 이 그림은 기독교 성경(외경)에 등장하는 이야기를 바탕으로 했다.

그런데 같은 주제를 그린 많은 그림 중 한 화가의 그림이 유독 그 장면을 생생하게 그려서 유명하다. 사람들은 왜 이 화가의 버전을 좋아할까? 여성이 그렸기 때문이다. 17세기에 활동한 여성 화가는 극히 드물고, 성공적으로 활동한 여성 화가는 거의 찾기 힘들다. 그런데 이 화가, 아르테미시아 젠틸레스키는 18세에 아버지의 친구에게 성폭행당했다.

아르테미시아의 작품들은 유행이 지나면서 사후에 거의 잊혀졌다가 20세기에 새롭게 조명되면서 큰 인기를 끌고 있다. 특히 1970년대 이후 다시 불붙은 페미니즘의 힘은 젠틸레스키의 작품을 다시 보게 하는 원동력이 된 게 사실이다. 그 바람에 이 그림은 성폭행당한 여성 화가가 그렸기 때문에 남성에 대한 분노가 담겨있는 것으로 해석되곤 한다.

하지만 그렇게 보는 게 맞을까? 그럴 수도 있다. 하지만 그런 렌즈로 이 화가를 바라보면 너무나 많은 것을 놓치게 될 뿐 아니라, 인물 자체를 오해하는 결과를 낳을 수 있다.

화가의 인생을 아는 것은 그의 작품을 이해하는 데 도움이 된다. 하지만 어설픈 이해는 오히려 장애물이 되고 작가를 이차원적으로 만들 수 있다. 사람들은 예술가가 남성일 경우, 특히 백인 남성일 경우 입체적인 인물로 생각하고 다양한 시도를 하지만 여성이거나 백인이 아니면 작고 납작한 해석의 공간 안에 쑤셔 넣는다.

오늘부터 소개하는 글은 그렇게 쉽게 생각하던 여성 예술가의 인생을 제대로 이해할 경우 그의 작품을 얼마나 깊고 다층적으로 이해할 수 있는지 보여주는 아주, 아주 뛰어난 글이다. 좋은 평론은 많고, 쉬운 평론도 많지만 쉽고 좋은 평론은 드문데, 이 글이 그렇게 드물게 보는 멋진 미술사+평론이다.

If Apple is, indeed, writing substantial checks to media companies to license their content for training models, the impact of this and other lawsuits against AI companies training on non-public data will be swift and meaningful.

This week I spoke to Andreessen Horowitz general partner Anish Acharya and Initialized founder Garry Tan about a two-year-old startup financial services startup they’ve backed: The Coterie, which sells software to help wealthy individuals, fund managers and institutional investors manage their investments in venture capital funds and other alternative assets.

It seems like a tough time to grow a business focused on selling software to venture investors, given that VC firms are in the middle of their worst fundraising year in the last decade. But The Coterie and its backers argue that the startup will be able to ride out the downturn and take advantage of a bigger trend. That is, more individuals want to become VC investors, or limited partners in VC funds—and more VC fund managers need to find limited partners beyond traditional endowments and pension funds. In other words, they need wealthy individuals with cash to spare.

VC firms, particularly new fund managers, “can no longer rely on large institutional investors,” said The Coterie co-founder and CEO Ethan Agarwal.

If you’re questioning whether a portal for VC investors is poised to generate the kind of returns LPs hope for, I am too. After all, it seems like the kind of product a venture capitalist would bet on, forgetting that millionaires make up less than 10% of the U.S. adult population. What’s more, venture investing is contracting. The number of new U.S. venture funds raised in the first three quarters of this year fell to 344, compared to over 1,400 in all of 2021, according to data firm PitchBook.

But Acharya and Tan—who is also Y Combinator’s CEO—say there’s still plenty of demand.

“If you look at the number of people who are wealthy in Silicon Valley in tech communities, all those people have an interest in investing and being part of that community,” said Acharya, who led a $33 million Series A investment in the company at a valuation over $100 million last year. “Usually that happens with investments in funds.”

Other startups, particularly Carta and AngelList, have also tried to capitalize on rising demand from individuals who want shares in private assets. The Coterie doesn’t make the connection between individuals and VC investments, as AngelList does, but handles what happens once an individual or firm agrees to invest. For $100 per year for each fund an LP backs, users can wire money using The Coterie’s payment systems, review fund subnoscription documents and track the performance of their funds’ holdings.

“You’ve got Robinhood to manage your public markets investments; you don’t have that for your privates,” said Acharya, a former Credit Karma executive and an investor in $12 billion–valuation payroll platform Deel. Tan added: “There are a lot of people who are accredited [high-net-worth] investors who can or should have much more exposure to alternatives.”

Perhaps that’s the case, though many banks with large wealth operations are happy to facilitate those investments. For now the startup may be benefiting from timing: Had the company gotten started during the peak of the bull market, Agarwal said, it would likely be in a difficult situation now. But The Coterie launched in late 2021, just as the market began to turn south, which encouraged the founders to stay lean. It only has 16 employees. (Agarwal declined to disclose revenue.)
