#FunFact Non-Newtonian Fluids

We shall start from the basic concept of viscosity: it is the measure of how well a fluid flows.

For example water flows quite well and it it less viscous than peanut butter, since the latter flows significantly less.

It is something measurable, but the details will not be explored here, what is important is that Newton's law of viscosity states that it is a value that independent of shear stress, that is to say having parts moving at different speeds.

Non-newtonian fluids do not follow this law (which is rather a law that follows from observation rather than a necessity).
The three main categories are fluids that become more viscous with stress, less viscous with stress and "solids" that become viscous with stress.
Of the first two there are two sub categories: immediately changing and changing depending on the time.

Shear thickening fluids
The most prominent and known example of non newtonian fluid is the oobleck (a mixture of corn starch and water), which can flow freely but if it is interacted with with force it thickens. You could, for example pour it but also, with enough force, knead it like dough.

Rheopectic fluid
There aren't many fluids that thickens with time of stress that can be encountered daily. Synovial fluid, that is the lubricant in the joints, is an example of this kind of fluid.

Shear thinning fluids
Common examples of this are quicksand and blood.

Thixotropic
An example of fluid that become thinner with stress over time is yogurt.

Bingham plastic
These are fluids that need a certain amount of stress before being able to flow, one common example being toothpaste.

hey, synovial fluid is there

fun fact about synovial fluid (may or may not be 100% scientifically accurate, since i was explained to a bunch of years ago):
sometimes, the "bag" which contains that fluid in your joints breaks, and the weird fluid gets out. once its out, usually it gets reabsorbed by the body, the bag gets autofixed, and you generate more fluid, because the human body is a perfect machine. some times, tho, it can decide to solidify in whatever form and not be reabsorbed. ask me how i know.
also, directly from wikipedia (because i opened the link just to make sure that i wasnt mixing things, tho i havent really read it), " Synovial fluid is an ultrafiltrate from plasma, and contains proteins derived from the blood plasma and proteins that are produced by cells within the joint tissues.[4] "

this (in a pseudoscience way at least) would confirm my theory/statement that when you are losing blood every day and/or anemic, your knees hurt substantially more, which i have had for many years now

okay now THIS one is the last one
good news yall, im in pain and thus the amount of brain damage that i will cause to everyone who opens this channel will be greatly diminished, because i probably wont be posting much about anything for an undetermined amount of time

for now, you can have this:

today i tried to explain to my localboomer that companies sell needlessly powerful devices just because they need an excuse to sell new things, and that the "big number means better" thing is real. you know, "if you can tell apart ram from dram and decide you want a phone with 10gb of ram, sure, go for it, but your regular person does not need such a thing by any means" etc etc

at some point, he semi-offendedly claimed that he needs a (more than one, actually) powerful phone, and i quote, because "i can read the newspaper better/faster/comfier [i dont remember the exact word nor i care] on a 120hz screen!"

note that, by that same argument, he bought a gaming laptop to be able to read the newspaper with rtx.

so yeah, thats where i gave up and stopped trying to argue why big number does not necessarily equal better (and even if it did, you dont need better). but oh boi what a ride.
im gonna post something that isnt a shitpost for once.

i usually try to avoid posting shit that will hurt ppl unable to turn off their empathy in this channel, but im not very in the mood right now, so, for starters, i will provide some context
im a person with physical problems. i've always been. and among those problems, there is "chronic physical pain", the ever-worsening type. that means that every year of my life, i will be having worse and worse pain. there are multiple pains like that in me, but for now, lets just center our attention in one type specifically

this pain particularly, is often between 6 and 9 in a scale of pain that goes up to 10. that means that sometimes it is bearable, and sometimes it is consuming. if i am very lucky, it will be under 6. if i am very unlucky, it will go over 9. i have spent many, many hours in my life just lying awake at night, unable to sleep all night long due to sheer pain, and straight up just trying to breathe because the pain was intense enough to make it difficult. and as long as my life keeps on going, it will still be like that

of course, medics have always been "i cant find anything wrong with you in my 5min interview, and you are too young anyway, so you must be faking it" or some other not helpful variation of that. i will not get into that now, tho.

thing is, this pain specifically is very reactive to coldness and humidity. this is the important point for now.

in fact, many pains, mostly the bones related ones, are reactive to cold+humidity, so it is normal to find old ppl whining about their bones when the temperatures drop
so, whats the issue?

some asshat (and by that i mean "public employees", "the government", or something like that) decided to put a lawn in front of my house. surrounding my house, in fact.

for starters, my neighborhood is cold. real cold. maybe 10º colder than the rest of the city. and because of circumstances that i wont be explaining due to doxxing potential, it is also VERY humid. absurdly humid.

it isnt the best place for me to be in, but i've lived here all my life and i have sort of gotten used to its "local climate"

except they put a lawn. and im not an expert in this, but im betting that they put an english grass variety.

for anyone who is not aware, i live in spain. and for anyone who is not aware, spain is *dry*. it is normal that it goes for 8 months in a row without a single rain, or when it rains in summer months, for it to be an exceptional situation and a "not big" rain. i invite everybody here to open google maps and compare the satellite view of spain and its neighbor country, france, for example.

ppl with a bit of culture will be aware that, in english-land, it rains a lot. ppl with a lot of culture might even know that an english grass requires a damn lot of water. i am not that cultured, but i know that the automated watering system is working like 5 times a day, maybe more, ever day. every. day.

it is, of course, one of those watering systems that just create a diagonal pillar of water and rotate over themselves, cue milhouse scene. the water rises close to two meters into the air, and part of it falls into the grass while the other part just melts with the air, charging it with more humidity. way more humidity. right in front of my window.

when i say that my neighborhood (and, very specifically, my house) is very humid, i mean it. some years ago, a brick+cement wall just started to melt because it was too saturated with water. the last thing i need is even more water in the air.

there are some more extra details that i dont have enough energy right now to provide, but the general scenario is that
now, due to this bullshit, and due also to "climate change means that the temperatures change drastically, you go from too hot to too cold without any middle point", this year im having a very strong "ouch my fucking body it hurts so much" initial reaction. and it is, honestly, not something that i can live with

therefore, i have decided to kill the lawn
