🇺🇲🇮🇹 The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Italy of 6 MQ-9 Reaper Block 5 UAS, 3 ground control stations, and other associated equipment and services for an estimated cost of $738 million.
The Italian Air Force already operates MQ-9 and recently upgraded that existing fleet to Block 5 standard via a previous FMS case.
The prime contractor would be General Atomics.
The denoscription and dollar value are for the highest estimated quantity and dollar value based on initial requirements. Actual dollar value will be lower depending on final requirements, budget authority, and signed sales agreement(s), if and when concluded.

@dverhoev: Yes, although I would not expect a massive decrease out of larger volumes. The real potential cost savings will come from diversifying the supply chain, which is already underway.

@druzhe_orest: Germany is buying them for the Luftwaffe but nothing precludes them from submitting Third Party Transfer requests in the future. These won't be delivered for many years though.

@MrButlerTV @dverhoev: LM makes PAC-3 MSE, Raytheon makes PAC-2 GEM. FMS customers can buy either. The Army doesn't have the money to buy all of LM's production capacity own their own. FMS demand is what allows those increases in capacity.
