Neither living the chaste life
nor gaining wealth in their youth,
they waste away like old herons
in a dried-up lake
depleted of fish.

Neither living the chaste life
nor gaining wealth in their youth,
they lie around,
misfired from the bow,
sighing over old times.

Dhammapada XII : Self

======================
Self : 157*

If you hold yourself dear
then guard, guard yourself well.
The wise person would stay awake
nursing himself
in any of the three watches of the night,
the three stages of life.

“There are four persons, ananda, worthy of a stupa. Who are the four? A Tathagata, a Fully Awakened Buddha; a Paccekabuddha; a disciple of the Tathagata who is an Arahant; and a universal monarch (Chakravartin).”

“And why, Ananda, is a stupa for the Tathagata worthy of a stupa? At the thought: ‘This is the stupa of the Tathagata, the Arahant, the Fully Awakened Buddha,’ the hearts of many people are inspired, and they gain in happiness and faith, leading to a good rebirth.”

“And likewise with regard to the other three: a Paccekabuddha, an Arahant disciple of the Tathagata, and a universal monarch. That is why, ananda, there are four persons worthy of a stupa.”

First
he’d settle himself in what is correct,
only then teach others.
He wouldn’t stain his name : he is wise.

If you’d mold yourself the way you teach others,
then, well-trained,
go ahead & tame–
for, as they say,
what’s hard to tame is you
yourself.

Your own self is
your own mainstay,
for who else could your mainstay be?
With you yourself well-trained
you obtain the mainstay
hard to obtain.

"Monks, one should pay homage to a stupa (thūpa) or shrine (cetiyagara) with a composed mind. A monk should not disrespect or disregard a stupa, whether it contains relics of the Tathagata, relics of disciples, or is merely symbolic (representing the Buddha). Doing so leads to a fault."

The evil he himself has done
–self-born, self-created–
grinds down the dullard,
as a diamond, a precious stone.

In the human world, I lived in the beautiful city of Rajagaha. My name was Sunanda and I was a female lay disciple of the Supreme Buddha. I had faith, virtue and was very generous. I had great confidence in the noble monks with pure minds. I offered them robes, food, resting places, and lamps.

I offered all those flower garlands with a happy mind to the relic stupa of the Supreme Buddha. I also went to relic puja ceremonies every Eight Precepts-Observance day. With great faith, I personally offered garlands, perfumes, and lotions to the stupa. God Sakka, I received this heavenly birth, beautiful body, and divine psychic powers by offering flower garlands.

When overspread by extreme vice–
like a sal tree by a vine–
you do to yourself
what an enemy would wish.

They’re easy to do–
things of no good & no use to yourself.
What’s truly useful & good
is truly harder than hard to do.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia, originally a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu in the early 12th century transitioned to be an important sacred place in Theravada Buddhism.

Angkor Wat's architectural design reflects Buddhist cosmology, particularly Mount Meru, considered the center of the universe in both Hinduism and Buddhism. Its central towers represent the mountain peaks, and the surrounding moat symbolizes the cosmic ocean.

The temple serves as a visual representation of spiritual progression, from the outer worldly realm to the inner sanctum of enlightenment.

The teaching of those who live the Dhamma,
worthy ones, noble:
whoever maligns it
–a dullard,

inspired by evil view–
bears fruit for his own destruction,
like the fruiting of the bamboo.

Evil is done
by oneself,
by oneself is one defiled.
Evil is left undone

by oneself,
by oneself is one cleansed.
Purity & impurity are one’s own doing.
No one purifies another.
No other purifies one.
