Tomb Raider: Legend: L’archeologia come simulacro dell’avventura perduta
Tomb Raider: Legend si presenta come un’opera oscillante tra due poli: da un lato, la fascinazione per la topografia del mito e il senso dell’enigma ambientale; dall’altro, la resa alla banalità narrativa propria dell’industria culturale.
L’esperienza di gioco si articola in uno spazio che potremmo definire esplorativo-esistenziale: il level design si propone come cartografia dell’anima, richiamando antiche rovine e tombe come scenari esotici e metafore del passato sepolto che attende di essere riportato alla luce. Gli enigmi, non riducibili alla mera funzione ostativa, si configurano come prove gnostiche attraverso cui Lara, si riappropria del legame perduto con la profondità del tempo e della storia.
Tuttavia, è proprio nel contrasto tra queste architetture simboliche e il sistema di combattimento che l’opera mostra la sua disarmonia: il gameplay action, incentrato su sparatorie e sequenze corpo a corpo, si risolve spesso in una meccanica estrinseca, incapace di integrarsi con l’ethos dell’esplorazione. In particolare, a difficoltà elevate, l’impianto ludico spinge inevitabilmente verso lo scontro a distanza, privilegiando l’uso delle armi da fuoco rispetto agli attacchi corpo a corpo o alle acrobazie offensive, che diventano troppo rischiose e poco efficaci. Laddove l’enigma suggerisce l’ascesi intellettuale, lo scontro ravvicinato si riduce a istinto reattivo, perdendo ogni valore simbolico.
L’impianto narrativo, per sua parte, risulta privo di pathos e profondità ermeneutica. La ricerca della madre, Amelia, avrebbe potuto rappresentare una potente metafora della memoria e della perdita, ma si smarrisce in dialoghi anodini e noscript preconfezionati, incapaci di offrire una tensione drammatica autentica. La storia si snoda così come deriva della funzione, piuttosto che come destino dell’essere.
Eppure, nonostante queste incongruenze, il gioco conserva una sua dignità esperienziale. Non si dà come opera straordinaria, ma nemmeno si svuota nel vuoto ludico del puro usa e getta. In tal senso, Tomb Raider: Legend è una narrazione interrotta, una figura della mancanza: mostra le potenzialità di un’avventura che avrebbe potuto elevarsi al mito, ma resta imbrigliata nel meccanismo produttivo della serialità.
In ultima istanza, è un gioco che diverte, sì, ma che non riesce a ferire. E come insegna Simone Weil, solo ciò che ci ferisce nel profondo ci trasforma davvero.
